West Cork Beach - 05/08/09

#1 Post by scombroid »

People: me

Duration: 20.30 - 22.15

Tide: HW at around 18:30

Weather: Clear skies, warm, fair bit of surf, full moon

Rigs: 1 oz. silver Toby lure

Results: 3 Bass

Report: Arrived at the beach and noticed that there was less weed than I had imagined which was a good starting point. I was trying out my first pair of waders and had some craic for the first half hour judging how far out to go without getting the odd big wave crashing into me face :) (eventually settled on having the depth just below the waist).

After about an hours spinning with nothing yet hooking up I decided to try another spot further down the beach, but immediately had the line and lure swaped by nasty weed, so I trudged back to my original spot where the weed had been very light.

The full moon was now over the horizon and about 5 minutes later I got my first bang, immediately knew it was a bass judging from the weight and the fight. I retrieved him, took a quick measurement (56cm) and a fellow fisherman offered to take a snap with yours truly before I set him free.

On the very next cast I got another bang and this one was putting up more of a fight than the first. Gradually took him in and measured a 51cm bass. This second bass had taken 3 of the treble hooks so with the fading light I had a difficult job unhooking the fish, but finally managed it before setting him free.

Things went quiet then for about 15 minutes before I hooked the 3rd bass of the night (taking my grand total of bass ever caught to 5 :) ), this was a smaller fish at 43cm but was quite a fighter.

Meanwhile up the beach the other guy fishing gave a whistle and I trekked down to see him take in what looked to be 60+cm 5+ lb. bass.

It was a great night's fishing and strengthened my growing addiction to bass fishing... I am going to stick to the lures (going to experiment with soft plastics next) for another while before returning to try bait fishing for bass.

Good stuff mate,
Your bait rods will end up on ebay when the lure addiction takes over

Some buzz using the soft plastics :D

Yep,

The key is to fish them very slowly, bump them on the bottom by gently lifting the rod as you retrieve. This will puff up sand etc attracting any near by predators.
