Galway Bay Bass 22.07.09

#1 Post by saltydog »

People: Corbyeire and Myself

Duration: 19:30-23:30

Tide: HT @ 18:20

Weather: Dry wind from the West turning Southerly later

Bait: Mackerel, Squid and Hardback crabs

Rigs: Pully's and 3 Hook Flappers

Results: Bass and Conger

Report: corbyeire was back in town so an after work session was planned. I decided to try a mark i'd fished a couple of times earlier in the year with no success after finding it on OSI map viewer, I got to the mark at around 18:20 and made my way down the boreen to the sea i forgot that the tides were big and was greeted with what looked like a canal cutting me off from the higher ground where the mark is... so back to the jeep to get the cest waders and i finally got across to the fishing grounds, the crabs were busy stripping the flapper in close while the bigger bait on the distance rod was lasting a bit longer... corbyeire arrived around 20:30 and got fishing... there wasn't much happening until i reeled in to change bait and spotted a fish mixed in with some weed and a little strap conger was landed first of the year so was happy with that and the fact that the mark had finally produced something at the third attempt... the tide was dropping fast so i decided to put my flapper rig out a little further and placed it just behind a bed of kelp... was chatting away to corbyeire when i got a big wallop on the flapper and the rod went straight down followed by a couple of sharp pulls... picked it up and could feel a decent fish pulling back then on the surface amongst the splashing and rolls was the familiar sight of a Bass... it was very dark nearly green on top and quite fat across the belly was chuffed at this stage after a quick photo he weighed in at 5lb 2ozs i held him in the water for a min til he recovered than off he went back into the depths... we fished on til 23:30 but no more fish showed... will try this mark again over an incoming tide and with lures when the water clears a bit...

excellent catch conor - im more and more convinced there are 2 hybrids of bass in our waters

ive listened to any amount of theories about a group from the north and a group from the south

these lads are plain different - its not just the fact that the top half is black - the morphology of the head is completely different to the ones on the east coast

you should stick up the pic of the canal - there was some crazy tides yesterday

as for myself another hard earned blank in the bay - but it was great to see that new ian golds rod bend like that - class :D

Cheers lads there seems to be a few Bass out there that people just aren't trying for there's 5 different marks around the bay that have all produced Bass ranging from 3.5lbs to 8lbs... here's a pic of the boreen which is usually bone dry the "canal" at the end of the lane was waist deep this again is usually bone dry the surrounding fields were also like lakes... the westerly wind along with the spring tide really made the water levels way above normal there was some flow of water running through the place
