Cork marks 21,22 July

#1 Post by rory from cork »

People: Myself and de brother Brian

Duration: About 2.5 hours

Tide: Falling

Weather: Big breakers, strong sw, and horizontal rain!

Bait: Rag,Razor,Sprat

Rigs: Running legers

Results: 7 Bass

Report: Tough nights fishing...arrived at the mark to find ideal weather conditions with a great swell and big surf running expectations were high until I noticed the carpet of weed stretching about 30-40yards in front of us....decided to give it a go anyway...first few casts were a disaster for me with the rod stand getting pulled over and losing traces to the weed. Brian was doing better and had a bass on the second cast. A sprat fell out of his mouth and which he stuck onto the hook and got another bass straight away on it. At this stage the slagging and heavy rain started. Turned around to put on the rain gear, heard a shout and the rod stand pulled over...Brian was struggling with weed while he hadn't noticed another bass on his second rod which ran across both of my lines...the resulting tangle meant tying another few traces in the dark and the lashing rain. The weed started to clear a bit and I got finally got going getting 3 bass in about 20mins...I was happy enough to stay at this stage but shortly after when the rain soaked through to Brians jocks we called it a night...the gear is still drying out at home  More of an endurance test than anything else but the fishing made up for it 8)

Bass weighed between 3.5-5lbs and all returned.

Headed back out again this afternoon (wearing damp waders) for a few hours to a mark in the harbour intending to do a bit of plugging but the water was very coloured and weedy. Had few rag left over and managed 1 bass about 5lbs...crabs were very active and stripping the hooks in minutes. On the way back saw what looked like a boat trawling the area between fort Carlisle and up towards Roches point :x

Thanks GF

Pat...between 4.30-5 ish. Trawler was blue and white. It started out before the fort moving slowly up past White Bay, stopped for awhile and then swung around and came back down again. I left just as it was getting back to the fort. Can't imagine what else it would be doing but hopefully I'm wrong...cheers, rory

The reason I ask Rory is that we were in that general area yesterday evening. The area is very heavily potted. There are about 4 boats working the area and with the number of pots down now it would be hard enough to trawl. It could be that this particular boat was dropping a couple of strings of pots. Nevertheless, any suspected netting activity should be reported and you should contact the SW fisheries regarding your concerns. You need as much detail though, name of the boat, number, etc.,... It would be worth reporting the matter, even if the only outcome may be to remove this boat from suspicion.

Cheers Seanie...plenty more marks to chose from

Pat...it didn't look like he was anywhere near the shoreline so I doubt it was bass they were after..I was over at the other side of the harbour so it was hard to tell. Just thought it was a bit strange so I said I'd mention it.....anyway, must invest in a better pair of binoculars so I can improve on my spying :)
