For a cheap intro that wont break your heart (or credit card) if you lose a few, try Kilty weighted plastic shads, you get a handful in packet for 7 or 8 euro and they do catch. Blue (they call it "sandeel" I think) and darker shades seem best in clear conditions, the brighter ones for gloom/dull water etc. There's a cheapish (8 euro) surface popper called a Bass Buster which I'm told is as good as pricey Yo-Zuris when the fish are feeding. My advice: don't spend top money until you get the hang of it, you'll only lose them and get discouraged.

My advice would be to read all you can in this lure forum , there are plenty of lures on the net and in shops that are designed to catch the angler rather than the fish, so better have a look here first before you buy.

There certainly are and I know I've bought my fair share of them over the years. I think if I was starting out again and buying lures for Bass, I definitely wouldn’t buy as many for a start  but I think I'd also be a lot more particular about the types of lures that I would initially get, for example I'd probably get one or two of each of the following types of lure: poppers, sub surface lures, mid / deep water lures, metal lures and perhaps a few soft plastics. I reckon something like that should give a pretty versitile set of lures to start off with. As for colours, personally I prefer fishy type colours but its often useful to have a brightly coloured lure or two in the box as well. Now as you probably already have realised lure fishing can be a minefield and that’s before you even begin to get into the Japanese and American stuff, now everyone will have their own preferences and there will always be some new 'must have lure' but the old classic lures like the German Sprats, Tobys, Kilty lures, Jointed Rapalas and Chug Bugs will still catch you plenty fish and won't cost you the earth either.

get a few lures for different light condtitions bright colours for bright days and dark for dull evening fishing, and add some lures for surface fishing and you cant go wrong! Alle Mags, Crystal Minows and the Maria Angel Kiss would be a great start.
