wicklow harbour 20-07-09

People:me

Duration:4pm-10pm

Tide:rising,high at 7pm approx

Weather:southerly breeze, dry

Bait:rag and mack

Rigs:mini rigs and 3 hook flappers

Results:blennies, ballan wrasse, corkwing wrasse, pollock, coalies, scorpion fish

Report:With a chance to blag my way in as ground staff at the Shamrock Rovers v Real Madrid match on offer,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I decided i'd rather spend the evening fishing instead and headed down the N11 to Wicklow Harbour  . Turned out to be the right decision in the end as the guys from work who blagged their was in as ground staff were all turfed out  ,, but thats another story. I'd rather get away from the crowds and grab some fresh sea air, but when i turned the corner at the pier half the country was there   . I made my way down to the end and set up the little rod only in the hope that i might move up later on when there was more room. Everyone was feathering for macks with no success, i heard a rumour later on that one was caught but until i see photographic evidence i wont believe it!! I was into the wrasse and pollock straight away and got a nice chunky ballan of 23cms, (seemed bigger at the time  ).

This brought a load of kids down and i made the mistake of telling them that their hooks were too big. "Have you any small hooks mister?",they asked and before i knew it i was tying on hooks and giving them bait :? . Ah well, they were decent kids anyway but i was stuck with them for the evening. Then i discovered my knife was missing  ,,, and my scissors came apart . I always carry spares but i gave my spares away to a guy in greystones who forgot his the other night :( .I had to cut up the bait with one half of a scissors ,or is that called a scissor :?: The kid i set up with a rig went down the pier , cast out and pulled in a ballen wrasse of 36cms   , he ran up for the measure and his Dad took a pic. I got a couple of decent pollock(for Wicklow Harbour  ) and the kids brother said,,"Can i have that for me Granda mister?". "No",says I, "I put my fish back in", but the pollock was deep hooked and Granda got him in the end. I had to laugh later on when the 2 kids Dad came down to thank me for helping them out and told me that the lad had told him he caught the pollock   .

I tried the big rod but there was too much weed out there, and all that i was getting was small whiting and dabs, the fish were bigger in close.

I hooked into a really decent pollock but he went into the weed and the hook came out, but thats the risk with the small hooks. I'll have to get to a beach soon and wean myself off the minis, i'm really addicted  , its sad really  but i have this fear of blanking, maybe someone will bring me to a secret mark where i'm guaranteed to catch  . One last incident, i noticed a guy with a lurcher coming down the pier. The lurcher was melting into the wall, with a look of foreboding on his poor face. He really didnt want to be there , and when the guy dumped him in the sea i realised why   . He came back and i challenged him, (well maybe challenged is too strong of a word) as to why he was doing that to the poor mutt. "I'm building up his muscles boss" he said. Not wanting to have my own muscles built up i let it go at that   I stayed till after 10pm catching small fish trying for the big one i know is there
