Dehooking tips?

#1 Post by Cormdogg »

Having a problem dehooking minis ESPECIALLY blennys & shannys. Have a gemini disgorger, works a treat for doggies and larger fish, have a little plastic disgorger which can sometimes work, usualy use my forceps that I got for trout, but still end up having to cut lines a bit and leave hook in the fish. All my hooks are barbless, I havn't quite got the hang of the gemini. Any help?

hey Cormdogg,
I find that while ya catch more minis with size 12', 10's etc, if i move up to 8's or even 6's, more are hooked in lip, less gut hookd. failin that, one of those fresh water disgorgers for roach and such work well, if you can get the damn blenny to open his grill!!!!

How can such a small fish have such a strong jaw? First time I caught one I got a nip on the thumb and had a huge blood blister. I shock alone nearly killed me! ;) I usually pry the mouth open with a baiting needle and try get in with my forceps. Thanks for the tip. Does anyone know what hooks decay the quickest? or where you can get the plyable wire ones? I experimented in Bray Harbor with worm bait threaded onto the line a rubber bead as a stopper and tied off at the end. Got 3 shannys and one wrasse just holding on for dear life! About 1000 dropped fish though.
