Report:first trip out in a while, (if you dont count getting conned by a skipper in spain for £180 for 3 lads catching feck all for 2 hours). . was thinking about waterfoot beach but ended up up heading towards browns bay area. a quick pit stop at the tackle shop and i was off, had heard that this area was throwing up good fish. arrived at the beach a bit earlier than i thought and the tide was still well out, and there was plenty of people about so i decided to move on round abit. arrived at the pier and got talking to a few local gents who told me i'd be better off at the beach as they're were'nt many fish being caught here .i'd never fished this part of the world before so did'nt know where to try next so i just set up and lumped a bait out. not much was happening except for feeding the crabs. another lad set up for spinning and after a few casts crossed my line , i was reeling in to sort it when i felt a take, could'nt belive it when i hauled a nice sized mackeral amongst the mess of rigs. gave up on the baits and tried a bit spinning which resulted in another nice mackeral. moved round to the beach after this as i thought the tide would be right to get some flatties.
set up at right hand side of the beach and straight away was getting small knocks but not much else, while chatting to a lad who had been spinning off the rocks i seen the rod and tripod getting pulled over and in to the sea,(nearly shat myself) thought i got moby dick till i realised that some d**khead on a jet-ski had snagged my line and only stopped after a load of people started shouting at him. that was the only bend the rod seen on the beach all night. tried portmuck for a last ditch cast but there were a few lads fishing iand i did'nt want to crowd them out as there's not much room down there. all in all not a bad session as i got my first 2 mackeral of the year, which the wee old lady next door is probably cooking now

Well done Minty, you caught a couple of fish and at least you didnt lose your rod

Nice 1 with the macs fella,pity nothing else turned up for ya but i guess thats fishing for ya,seems to be a bit hit and miss everywhere lately.

anyone telling where exactly ya fish at browns bay? how far long the rocks do ya need to go? or where the best place is?

i am thinkingof a few hours there this evening and looking for some info

at the right hand side of the beach there is a path that leds around the rocks to a place called painted rock, few lads were catching a few yesterday, beach is very shallow and would recommend waders to walk out or you'll be fishing in 3-4 foot of water, ballylumford pier seemed alright but if you head for the beach beware the jet-ski's

they must be appeariung closer to shore now, tried macky traces on donaghadee for a while, nothing at all on the macky feathers.

Browns bay is cracker for dogfish, I usually fish in the middle of browns bay cuz I hate seaweed, an the middle just to the left of the steps is nice an smooth. You dont need to cast far out its deeper than you think, usually about 100 yards seems good. The best time seems to be warm nites when the tide starts comming in at sunset, however I caught 4 large dogfish one saturday night on outide. Mack seems a good bait for dog, and you shouldnt expect a bite untill it gets dark

cheers for the info mate, i was getting a load of weed on the rigs as i was bringing them in, i'll deffo be back to the beach again so i'll keep that in mind as i love a wee doggie bashing session

Cool, Im headin down on friday night after work, sure give me a shout if ur headin down, low tide is at 6:45 so im gonna dig some lug in carrick 1st then head down for about 8 or 9

well i got to browns bay and fished the beach for a while til there was no beach left, headed off down the right side of the bay to the rocks at the point, one wee wrasse and 1 wee pollack

Is it only me or is the humble mack the best lookin fish in the sea

yes mate it just looks like a natural predator but the wrasse is lovely looking with all those different colours, if only i could get one

Easiest way to catch wrasse. Go to portmuck pier, just on the far side of the pier is some rocks on the right. Sit on the pier just to the left of those rocks and cast real close into the weed. Use a sensitive rod an a small hook, pretend your 4 years old an just bought a rod for a fiver an you will catch them all day. Lug works well even thin strips of mackrell. use a float is best or just a tiny round wieght is all you need.

P.S. how did you catch that thornback ray, I cant seem to get anything other than dog, mack, plaice, wee pollock an wrasse. Im sick of catching these fish I want something else?

the one in the profile picture is a cuckoo ray that i caught up at waterfoot peir, think it was more luck than effort though, but i did get some nice thornies up at fahan beach a while back at our club comp.
