Penn 68 for casting

#1 Post by Takca »

Hi All,
been reading around here for a few days and soaking up a lot of information,
I am looking for a bit of advice.

About 13 years ago I spent some time Boat angling and bought a Penn 68 and some
kind of boat rod with my confirmation money :-)

It got some use boat angling and has been mainly sitting up in a shed for the
last few years.

I hope to get back into angling again but perhapes from the shore mainly, my
main question is this

can this reel be used with a beachcaster or am I just asking for a endless mess
of birds nests? Was it only intended for boats?

This might be a silly question but do you need a shorter stronger spinning rod for
casting off rocks to cope with the strain when caughed on rock/weed?

If it can be used would I be able to use the same reel and switch the rods If I was
to go out on a boat? Or would I need to switch lines aswell?

Thanks All

im not familiar with the reel - but id say you could use it with a beachcaster if you are just casting 50 yards max and not trying to hit the horizon

as for the spining rod i would definitley go for a longer rod if its off rocks so you can pendulum fish in and also keep the tip down really low

having it stiffer or lighter is up to yourself really and the size of your expected catches more important for dealing with weed/rocks is your end tackle - the type of lures used or if bait fishing using rotten bottoms etc.

you could also use braid - but thats another story

Hi, the penn 68 was one of the long beach series of multipliers. Dont be confused by the long beach term as it is most def a boat reel. I have one in the shed myself.

A half decent although very basic but bullet proof reel albeit with a horribly slow retrieve ratio. That reel would be a complete and utter nightmare to try and cast to be honest. Its far too big and wide and you will only be annoying yourself and opening up a whole world of pain for yourself. It would be fine legering baits down the side of a pier for conger or something but aside from the boat, thats about it.

For the sake of a few quid, go buy yourself a cheap fixed spool and take things from there until you get into it a bit more. 30 or 40 quid will get you started.

I have an old and I mean "old" Penn Long Beach 68 on a rental rod that still regularly lands blue sharks great old reel but useless for shore fishing its too big n slow, its only a small step down from a senator 6/0 in size 250m of 50lb mono only half fills the spool on it  To cast with it would be a nightmare n you'll be for ever sorting out birds nests

Thanks for the replies, looks like I need to get my hands on a reletivly cheap fixed spool reel. Once I figure out what I'm doing
and if I'm doing it right I'll post up any reports that might be usefull to others.

Thanks again
