Squid fishing?

#1 Post by Dave »

I was just tidying away my gear yesterday and I found a few squid jigs that I picked up at some stage and never got around to using and it got me thinking, Squid fishing isnt something you really hear about here especially from the shore but its very popular in other countries and a lot of people specifically target them. I'm just wondering if is it possible to target Squid or Cuttlefish from the shore here, if so where and at what time of year?

If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

Anything on the East coast? unfortunately I don't get to fish the West coast very often. I've heard of people reeling in whiting with chunks missing off some of the Wicklow beaches at times and suspecting cuttlefish but I'm just wondering if anyone has actually tried to catch them? I'm curious to know if they are there to be caught but no one fishes for them or is it more a case that they don't come close enough to shore or not in sufficient numbers to target? :?

Welcome back Dave. I don't think the squid we get here are good to eat. Not sure but i think our kind are much bigger but tougher than kalamari. Loads of cuttlefish shells down around wexford way recently. Must be able to get them from around carnsore but i reckon you'd lose a hell of a lot of them down there.

Cheers Ronan, tbh I hadnt really thought about what I'd do with it if I caught one, just wondering if they could be caught. I had a feeling we might get a different species here alright. I might have a go for them next time I'm down your direction, although I have a feeling the bass and smoothies may take priority.
