Antrim Coast 14-07-09

#1 Post by round_ourway »

People: Me & Eddie

Duration: 7.00pm - 12.00pm

Tide: lw @ 9.50

Weather: South Winds 14 mph turning to calm around 10.00pm

Bait: Sandeel, Mackerel, Squid

Rigs: Pennel Pulleys

Results: Huss, Dogfish, Mackerel

Report:

I gave Eddie text late in the afternoon asking did he want to give the Huss another shot. We got there shortly after 7pm and quickly set up. The gulls were frantically dive bombing to the left of us for most the night. It was the biggest concentration of gull diving I have seen.
A couple of wayward casts led to nothing then eddie pulled in some fresh mackerel for bait. This made the difference and with some more robot dancing I got a decent cast.
Almost immediately I started getting some timid knocks then the rod starting bouncing on the tripod. Time to reel in.... what followed was this wee beaut.

Couple of Pictures and it was released quickly. The heart was pumping when I handlined the last ten feet out of the water.

Some serious muscle on these fish!

So they are getting bigger, maybe a doubled figured one next time! Heres hoping!
The fresh mackerel made all the difference.

Another excellent fish there man well done. You are becoming a dab hand at those huss now, so pob wont be long before the double figure. Really the freshness of the bait is half the fishing.

cheers lads. The fresh mackerel was making a real difference. as soon as the bait was hitting the water the rod was going like crazy. A couple times I got smashed by something bigger. Some amount of weed towards the low tide with tackle loss high
