Wicklow Harbour 14/07/09

#1 Post by dfella25 »

Hank, Boycie and me (and loads more!!!!!):

1:30pm until 5pm:

Rising:

Beautiful then lashed just at the end:

Rag:

Mostly 2 and three hook flappers:

Lots and lots and lots of mini's :

I kind if ended up here today by accident. I had promised Hank that I'd bring him down last week but he was away in Galway. He had been doing a bit of work and spent his money on tackle. So needless to say he wanted action and he loves Wicklow. I told him we'd dig some bait and see how the weather turned out. I really didn't think we'd be going after getting lashed on digging the rag but he would not take no for an answer. So we picked up the gear and headed down. Boycie was more then willing to tag along too as he was meeting someone there later on.

We got down and set up in record time as I was under the clock to get home. I put a rod out at distance hoping for a Plaice! And hung a mini rig over the side. We were all straight into the usual suspects of Wrasse, pollock, pouting aqnd I pick up double numbers of Tompot Blenny's. I really hate those fish!!!!!!! I also managed a little codling too so new species for me :P Hank managed a few whiting, wrasse and pollock and even a small plaice too

In between all this my little 5 foot mini rod bent right over and the reel cranked as I brought a big Wrasse to the surface. I was using 10lb mono and it was a struggle to get him up the wall to land. He was deeply hooked but Boycie got hook out while I got spiked repeatedly as he jumped about. A quick measure showed him at 37cm so I matched my personal best with him. I think it was a Ballen but it had the black spot underneath. Not a great photo but if anyone can make it out I'd be grateful.

I may have picked up the long awaited Coalie but the general opinion of the tiny fish was it was a Pollock. Nearly came to blows over it but I was out numbered so I backed down. After a few hauls of weed from out at distance it was time to go. No Plaice for me but a delighted I picked up the little Codling. Until as I was leaving and Boycie pulled one out over the 30cm mark

A good little session in a place that really makes up for some late night blanks. And Hank headed home chuffed with his selection of the day.

The place is mental! You really never know what it will throw up. Hank is only 14 so he loves the fact he will deffo get a fish there. I got nagged all the way home about going back next week. I'll probably give in too

Well done mate, still hitting the Tompots eh? You'll get that plaice & Coalie yet.......I was down Dun Laoghaire today, a bit of a mare with the amount of mack bashers but had 4 species. Gimme a shout when you're headed out next, well up for a session. Have the parents over for the weekend but anytime apart from that.
Fish 2009; Whiting, Dab, Pollock, Short Spined Sea Scorpion, Flounder, Ballan Wrasse, Bass, Blennie, Tompot Blennie, Coalfish.
