Wexford Fishathon 2009 - Part 2

#1 Post by saltydog »

People: Myself (mostly)

Duration: Many hours

Tide: All stages

Weather: Dry for the most part

Bait: Crab & Rag

Rigs: Various

Results: Starry Smooth Hound, Common Smooth Hound, Dabs, Dogs, Whiting

Report: Monday 6th July 22:00 - 05:00
Hit a North Wexford beach that i haven't fished in a while and it was a very busy session, with a doggie on the first cast setting the tone for the evening plenty of dogs a couple of dabs had to wait an hour for the first smut to arrive then got a double and a treble of smoothie dog and baby smoothie :) ended up with 5 Smuts and dropped a few good ones also lost one in the surf as i tried to beach him made a run to try and grab him but a wave got to him first just a s i reached for him ah well was happy out best of the night was 6lb 2ozs finished with a treble of Dog Dab and Whiting...

Tuesday 7th July 21:30 - 04:00
Another North Wexford beach for this session had planned on hitting a few beaches further South but with the beaches fishing well up this side said i'd stay put for the time being as there is patchy weed in the water and the venues i had in mind down South can suffer badly from weed... fishing was slower on Tues with a few doggies making an appearance no dabs or whiting and landed 2 Smuts best of the night 6lbs 5ozs dropped two other fish one felt like a cracker....

Wednesday 8th July 22:30 - 03:00
Shortest session of the trip so far as i was joined by my Mammy who's mad about fishing since she was a child in Cork... I'd made a trip to Dublin earlier in the day to pick up a new rod off Rockhopper which i've been asked to test out as it's one of a range of 5 Ian Golds Rods due to go on general sale shortly i'll put up a review in the tackle review section at the end of the week. First fish of the night was a 4lb 7oz smut on the new rod which handled it very well.. i lost one fish it the surf again trying to beach him ended up losing as many as i caught including what felt like the best fish of the trip which got snagged up in something and the main line snapped... still was rewarded in the end with my best smut of the trip at 7lbs 8ozs called it a day and returned to base to share a bottle of vino with my ma and listen to all the stories of her father catching all manner of fish on spinners he'd tapped out while he was stationed in Cork.... did anyone hear of Sheeps worms being good for fish?? i'm presuming salmon or trout here??

Really hard to reply with something nice when the green eyed monster is in my ear, but I'll try!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great session Conor and lovely smuts. Fair play for hanging in with three long sessions but well worth while when you see the pic's. Down in Wexford myself for the next few days but Stalin is with me so there will be a zero tolerance policy on the fishing front.

Nice fish Connor, where did you get those red contact lenses I want some for Haloween  Its about time you caught some of those toothies close to home. Went out to a Galway tope mark Saturday and a load of Knackers( sorry, Nomadic caravan dwellers) turned up for their monthly bath and started swimming at about 10.20 pm

Great stuff, Conor. You're certainly putting in the hours over the last few months.
