Killiney, Dalkey 7/7/09

#1 Post by Cormdogg »

Me.

rag,

spinners,plugs, mini rig,2 hook flappers

6-11pm

tide almost full in on arrival

calm,occasional drizzle

0ne decent wrasse!

First stop Dun Laoighre tackle shop for rag and dexter wedges, second stop the local fish mongers to try get some fresh mack (closed) third, pound shop for kit kats, then back to the car for parking ticket! Damnit, They come from nowhere in DL!

Descended the steps at white rock beach with a heap of gear, Traveling light is always better! Didn't fancy rock hopping so into the waders and into the water, a few plugs and spinners up and down the beach, no joy, lots of weed, took a slap of a wave right in jewels, nearly knocked the life out of me. Was too warm in the waders to set up the tripod and put out two rods with rag. Got Eric on the blower for moral support, His advice was to pack up and go to Poolbeg lighthouse, Eric had a lot on his mind so I didn't get into geography with him! ;) I left bout 8.30, beach life isn't for me (yet) As I was leaving a lad came down with one rod and a little bag and bounded over the rocks to a place that looked great for Pollock, wished I could've buried my gear in the sand and joined him.

Went to Dalkey with the hope of spinning for some pollock myself, Got a decent wrasse on a mini rig but that turned out to be it for me, Had 2 hook flappers out with rag but nothing was interested in them.

I could actually write a better report on the group of lads beside me, They were getting a few wrasse and pollock on rag, then one lad got a big sized mack on rag, they baited that up and they couldn't stop catching fish, they got double after double of dogs, a ling about 3 ft long! Never saw one caught there before. goes to show how awesome a bait fresh mack is! I asked could I have a bit and eh......they said no. Fair enough I suppose????

One young lad had a mack head out and got a 15lb plus conger, it was huge, he got it on a wire trace attached to a blue rope and he just hand lined it in! He showed me a pic he had a 30lb in the same spot a week before, I went over for a closer look and to offer my torches so the lad could get a decent pic. And in fairness to the lad he was very conscientious about getting the eel back in the water as soon as possible. It was a seriously impressive fish I think I might have new target species!

I tried to get through my bait as fast as possible and after counting my millionth spinner cast I went home fed up! Enough of Dalkey for a while methinks.

Hey Cormdogg,
That was me with the spinning rod last night and if its any consolation I caught nothing! If been catching the odd bass from that corner over the last few seasons on plugs and thought i'd have a go last night, but the weed was a joke...
