New to Lure Fishing ... Help needed

So the other i bought myself a spinning rod and reel from Rory's in Temple Bar but have yet to catch anything yet . So i have a few questions..

1. Do i just tie the lure on to the end of the line ?

2. How would i set-up my trace? Like would i put on a weight or swivel or anything ?

3. Would anybody be able to point me in the right direction of where to fish around for maybe just pollock or even mackeral just till i get the hang of things ?

4. Also would the way i retrieve the line make a difference ?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me . because im srating to become disillusioned but am not willing to give up

hi kev,welcome,

1 tie on a crane swivel,then you can then change lures quickly also it gives the lures more action.

2 no need for weights if you use lures with a bit of weight, if your concentrating on pollock or mackys then german sprats or dexter wedges of about 30-35gms will give you good distance.you can also tie on some mackerel feathers behind the lure.

3 where are you based? im from mayo so can only help you out in the galway/mayo/sligo coast,but in general rock marks work for both species

4 depends on the lures you use but in general for german sprats a steady retrive or changing the speed of the retrive from fast to slow will work

Thats a great help thanks alot emm im based in Dublin but il just head to a few rock marks around Dublin and give it a shot. And as for the fishing im just going to start of fishing for pollock and mack so that i can tune up on my skills before i head out to a few places i have spotted for bass.. Again thanks alot , all i gotta do now is catch one

Buy sea angler mag .... great stuff in it for all types of sea fishin....and it will change the target species for each season.....but most important is to get out as often as possible and you will learn loads......

I try to get out once or twice a week, went to one of my rock marks yesterday in search of bass but no luck, gonna head out again tomorrow evening hopefully and il pick up a copy of that magazine thanks.

try very early morn or dusk with the lures.... later in sept ,oct,nov try big baits close in ...a whole squid in sept on a 4/0 hook or a whole joey mack... this will get the bigger fish (hopefully).. keep tryin and you will not be disappointed.......

But after hearing this and considering our current economic climate i would rather pay for quantity

But sure il pick up both anyways and decide for myself . Thanks for the recomendations. Also im headin out for a bit of spinning for bass tomorrow hopefully i get the right conditions and my first lure caught fish and my first bass its a big ask tho
