Wexford Fishathon 2009 - Part 1

#1 Post by saltydog »

People:Myself mostly

Duration:Many hours

Tide: All Stages

Weather: Mostly good a few showers

Bait: Crab and Rag

Rigs: Various

Results: Dabs, Dogs, Smoothies, Thornback Ray, Whiting, Flounder

Report: Friday 3rd July: 21:30 - 04:30
Arrived down Friday evening picked up some bait and headed off to a North Wexford mark that i hadn't fished in a good while..it was hectic fishing from the first cast to the last constant string of doggies biggest was 68cm good few dabs and one starry smut...

Saturday 4th July: evening boat trip from 17:00-21:00 report is here viewtopic.php?f=5&t=22363&p=172377#p172377 and shore session 23:00 - 06:00
Was joined by one of my friends from Wicklow for Saturdays sessions... hit a different North Wexford venue were some big smuts had been caught the evening before... fishing was alot slower than the night before took a while but eventually the fish homed in to where we were doggies and dabs a small thornback ray a dropped smut for my buddie Nigel and i lost a big ray have caught plenty of Ray upto 8lbs from the shore this one was lot bigger i couldn't stop him got him in just behind the surf he dived again and i couldn't gain on him he was heading off down the beach with me in tow the dissaster he crunched the hook a Sakuma 3/0 all i got back was the shank of the hook was gutted at losing what was a definate double figure...

Sunday 5th July: Beach session: 23:00 - 04:15 Lure session: 04:30 - 06:00 Headed to another North Wexford mark for this session was surprised to see there was no other anglers on the beach as this spot has been busy of late... set up two rods the moon being nearly full was giving off great light.... was there for hours nothing doing couldn't believe it fished here last week and had a very busy session... then after about 3hrs of no fish i was baiting up one of the rods when i saw the other rod get walloped ran over picked it up smut on gave a great fight as there was a nice surf running and he headed of down the beach bit... landed the fish and got a pic which was tricky trying to get the fish in position before the timer went off not the best pics but best i could do under the circumstances he wouldn't stay on the box for a photo... he went of like a shot when i put him back best smut so far this year 8) bouyed up by this and a 1ltr bottle of Boost i fished on got a double of dog and flounder and another couple of dogs... as i was breaking down my second rod a Bass jumped clean out of the water about 4ft in and side flopped in a big splash back in.... with this i decided as i was still feeling farily fresh to head to a nearby rock mark where some good Bass have been showing to try some lure fishing... the clarity was completely different than the week before with the water full of sand and patchy weed i said i'd give it a shot regardless and put on a surface popper with a rattle to try and get a Bass to zone in it and keep it away from the patchy weed lying just below the surface..... after 30mins of rock hopping and nothing happening a fish made a go for my lure just behind it stopped the lure dead hoping he'd have a 2nd go but no joy fished on for another bit but nothing doing hopefully when the wind turns Westerly and settles later today the water will start to clear.... heading out again this evening mark to be yet to be decided...
