Strangford Lough mullet,5-7-09

#1 Post by Davy Murdoch »

People:just me

Duration:3+ hrs

Tide:either side of high

Weather:strong sth wind,patchy cloud

Bait:bread

Rigs:float

Results:mullet

Report:Had wanted to fish one of my usual marks but the strong south wind knocked that on the head :( so i got the map out and looked for somewhere facing north.
As soon as i arrived at my chosen mark i spotted mullet 8) As i moved along the coast i could see the odd fish milling around on their own but i wanted to find some sort of feature that would keep the mullet in one spot.
I didn`t have to look for long and came across a wee muddy creek beside an old fish trap.If it was good enough for the monks then it was good enough for me
Straight away i found the mullet just out from the creek and chucked some bread to them. The wind had died but i still couldn`t see if any where take bread so i just had a chuck anyway. The higher the tide got the more mullet arrived and i soon had 20 odd good fish infront of me.3 casts later and i was into a fish which looked about 4-5lb but less than a minute and it came off :(
Not a bad start, atleast they were taking bread. The next 5 mins saw the wind pick up with a vengance  The mullet moved in to the fish trap which gave me 20 mins of comfortable fishing before the tide rose over the boulders and it was too choppy to fish properly.Lots of fish taking bread but none took the piece with the hook in it so it was time to move further round the corner to get completely out of the wind.Think i`d walked just over a mile but it was well worth it cos i found a great spot with plenty of big fish which hung around for the whole time i was there.I think i saw a few fish feeding but i had no luck getting them on the hook... It was still worth the walk, always nice to find a new mark and this one was covered in scrape marks in the mud.
I`ll def be back here soon.On the way back to the car i stopped at a spot i`ve been trying to get a mullet out of since march.i threw in some bread and watched for a while, within 5-10 mins a nice wee mullet was happily munching away on every free offering on the surface.I got the rod out and had a go at it but every time i cast in he scarpered :( I fished for nearly an hour before i finally got him to take the hook. It put up a good fight and i had some wee lad videoing the whole thing on his phone  Got it in the net and it weighed in at 3.45lb.not bad for my last cast 8)
now i know they can be caught here i`ll try it again soon :D

mullet number 11 for the year, just need to get hooked into a few bigger fish now :D

Good job Davy. Always good when a plan works out. Yea man good idea keepin a few to yourself, especially when ya put the hard work in to find it. I think if the offer was good enough Colin, Davy would share the mark with his good mate

nice one davy. good to see plenty of mullet being caught this year, even i got my first one for 2009 in june.

there seem to have been a lot of mullet around the saltwater briggs this year, not sure how big exactly, there seem to be a lot of smallish ones in the shallow areas, but i think there are a few bigger ones also moving.

was checking out a spot i fish for them, saw a few moving about, some fairly decent ones too, intending on getting a session on the lough soon for a new PB, hopefully.

plenty of huge mullet at the brig dan but its a fishing nightmare...
if you manage to get them feeding and hook one you`ll have a real fight on your hands trying to keep it out of the bladder wrack.also if you hook a screamer it`ll be around the rocks before you can blink.
haven`t caught any from here but have tried it a few times.im always put off by the obstacles....
