I have just had a look at Veals. I think you might be better off buying one of there custom combos.
That way you know what you are getting. A lot of the rods they sell have the option to buy a real at discounted prices. Feather etc are really cheap on ebay.
You could buy a £30 combo as you have mentioned but how long will it last?
The reason I am saying this I have bought a completely wrong setup :( (A telescopic spinning rod and a real that's to light duty and with the wrong kind of line) It will cost me a few Euro to get the right setup but at least i can fish in the mean time.

I wish I had bought a Branded rod + real which would have cost me an extra 20 Euro.

Good luck with what you buy for your son.

Why Veals, try Belfast Angling Centre on Northumberland St. Belfast. They will match any of Veals prices and you can see and feel what your buying. Dont be in a hurry, you could spend all day browsing and empty the bank account if not carefull. The lads in there will give you good sound advice. Good luck and enjoy what ever you buy.

Some good advice above. And with you being up that way, why not take a run to Portrush and look in the tackle shops there. Flying tackle for instance always have rod n real deals on offer. At least you get to see what you are buying, and if you dont like it try the shop 3 doors up. At least 3 shops on that street sell fishing gear. :D :D
