Bray Harbour 29/06/09

#1 Post by Cormdogg »

Me and my mate Dec

6-10pm

tide just starting to head out

rag, mack

Lovely weather, but breezy

mini rigs,feathers,baited feathers,2 hook flappers,One hook ledgered,flattie rigs

Dec-Dab and 10 or so mini whiting. Me-Pollock,20 plus mini whiting,3 shanny/blenny fellahs

When we arrived and we saw 3 huge Mullet lazily cruising around the inside of the harbour, wish I had some bread! Never been in the harbour in the summer months, the water is surprisingly clear there.

Not too much to report we had big mack baits out at far in the hope of dogs. Anything in close rag or mack was hit in seconds literally by the tiniest whiting Ive ever seen, Got one little pollock in the mix. As if the whiting wasnt enough there was the plague of crabs, bait came back stripped every time, Got a decent sized edible but he nipped me and I dropped him back! Dec got a dab on rag yet again that fish aludes me. I was hoping for wrasse but our rag had gone a bit rank. I started dropping down the cracks in the harbour and got a couple of shannies, theyre a night mare to unhook to I gave up on them too.

Had a few casts out with feathers and a spinner but no bites, I only saw one other angler catch a fish the whole time we were there and it was a launce on feathers.

SIn e, no pics worth taking, dunno If I rate Bray Harbour much. But lovely evening

Ah no it was a good session and the harbour was very clean which was good to see obviously a few bad eggs had to dump trace wrappers and bait boxes after them. But cleaner than colliemore , dalkey or the end of the DL west pier. I couldn't get over the water clarity.

Ill be back for those mullet! The whiting were just on every hook as soon as the traces hit the water, Are they not supposed to be a winter fish?

That place is always a pain with the crabs, but you got a good few fish for your efforts.

Never seen mullet in there though, so thats interesting.

I find lug is best for the dabs, but they will take rag and fish baits.

You did well enough fair play  . In fairness it was still bright when you left , the doggies might have come with dusk. You were unlucky with the dabs, theyre usually around. At least you got hit by the plague of crabs, to get the genuine Bray Harbour experience   . I've seen lots of people fishing for a few hours , then leaving just before it gets dark when things usually hot up a bit. I know not everyone can stay late. I've never seen mullet there either  . Which side of the pier were you on?

Id have stayed on only we ran out of bait and we wanted to go down the amusements!

On the Pier you drive onto, As we were walking down just at a newish looking metal addition with steps down to the water. 3 large Mullet slowly cruising together about 15ft out from the wall, The water was about 10 or less ft deep, like I said the water was crystal clear, they swam level to the pier for a while then went off under a boat, didn't spot them again. My first time there in daylight/summer hours and usualy the place is full of swans maybe the mullet don't like em? Id be curious to see what a bit of ground baiting could achieve. Ive never caught one, maybe Ill nominate myself!

The harbour is full of mullet, been fishing for em for the last few weeks, at the moment they are coming in on the rising tide, doing a lap of the harbour and heading up stream. I've found that they aren't interested in feeding on a rising tide, only on the slack, when they are on their way out, even then they are teasing little feckers!!

Saying that i have managed to hook a couple and a mallard
