Species Hunt Wexford

#1 Post by ronanohal »

Had a few hours to spare on Sunday so grabbed a load of gear and dumped it into the car without any real plan. Knew I'd be fishing the entire ebb so wasn't overly hopeful. Tried to pick up a mackerel or launce down at The Safe but no joy. Headed on then to Carnsore Point with a view to doing a bit of float fishing and trying to pick up a wrasse but when i got there the tide had gone out too far and the small swell made some of the less weed-covered rocks a little too dangerous for my liking. One hour of walking around looking for somewhere to cast a float i decided to pack it in and head back to the safe to try for a mullet. Plenty of decent sized mullet about but after 2 hours of groundbaiting with red Sensas groundbait and plain old bread the best i got was a couple of line bites. Saw one lump of a mullet pick up a loose bit of bread and spit it back out again half a second later but they just wouldn't switch on to it. At first they were definitely feeding on something - they were scouring out the bottom, leaving little trenches behind them - but that behaviour soon switched to small groups following each other in circles and some even jumping clear of the water. Got a couple of mysteriously slow sideways bites that turned out to be crabs. First mullet session unsuccessful. I'll be back to try again though.
