How to get something besides mackerel ?

#1 Post by flynnboy »

Hi Guys

I was out fishing last night off a small harbour and I pulled 34 Mackerel inside 1hr - great fun. But now I have enough mackerel for the freezer. I am new to sea fishing and so wondered if someone can suggest another method that would stop me pulling mackerel ? I was using Mackerel rigs - would a spinner get something else or would that continue to pull the Mack ? Bottom fishing from the harbour - what would that pull ?

Thanks for any advice

were is this small harbour .And try plug fishing but bottom fishing would be your best bet to avoid the macks but don t use sliver hooks because alot of the time they grab them on the way in

Mack will continue to be caught if they are around. In my experience they go for pretty much everything....worms, feathers, spinners etc.

When the mack are not around you could try for pollack, coalfish, wrasse etc. It depends what is normally caught at this harbour? The mackeral will be gone by september anyway.

Howdy if you read through the shore reports section and see the different baits, rigs and tactics being used to catch a variety of species you'll pick up plenty of info to help you along. The best thing you could do is join a club you'll learn alot fast and if you can get out for a few sessions with experienced anglers and see what they're doing you'll be away in a hack... tight lines.

P.s. start off with a two or three hook flapper and fish the bottom vary the baits you'll pick up plenty of other species...
