Strangford Lough mullet,21-6-09

#1 Post by Davy Murdoch »

People:myself and the mullet master

Duration:just over 3 hrs

Tide:2hrs before and 1+hrs after high tide

Weather:cloudy,dizzle

Bait:bread

Rigs:floats

Results:mullet

Report:I tried this mark on sat morning and from the moment i arrived i could see lots of good fish, maybe a few 100.but i had more bad luck and i lost 3 fish :(
We decided to try here again on sunday after i told colin about the size of some of the fish i`d spotted, maybe 6-7lb.the weather was pants with drizzle and an onshore wind but decided to have a crack anyway...
Colin was first down to the water and straight away saw a few hundred fish moving in but they turned and headed back out :o Once i was down by the water i could see a few fish moving up the channel with the tide but not in the same big numbers from sat morning.I was starting to think the wind was gona ruin our chances when colin spotted loads of fish moving around in the shallows behind him. When we looked around there was fish everywhere, and even though there was a chop on the water the mullet were so active they were easy to spot.
The next 2 hrs were very frustrating as we couldn`t tell if they were taking the bread.I only saw a few fish taking some of the free offerings. But as high tide approached they started taking a big interest in what was floating on the surface and we started to get a few bites. The next 30mins were nerve wrecking but fun  and the language turned the air blue, but i was finally rewarded with a proper bite and struck into a good fish 8)
I caught a glimpse of it as it splashed around and it looked huge.It done a couple of short runs before everything went slack :( I think i whispered something like "darn that poor mullets came off" but then i noticed my float was coming towards me quicker that i was reeling  I caught up with it and the fish was still there so i decided to head back to shore to get my net, which i had stupidly left at my arse.
It was like walking a dog that didnt want to go for one but i made it to dry land and couldn`t find the bloody net cos the tide had covered it  The mullet really didn`t want to come into the shallow water and i had real trouble getting my hand to it but after 5 mins the job was done 8)
It was weighed straight away and came in at 4.5lb,my biggest this year.a quick photo and it swam away strong. :D
Colin was still fishing and the tide was quickly dropping but there was still plenty of fish around.Im sure there was well over 1000 fish past us as the tide dropped but no more hook-ups,just the odd fish taking a piece of bread as it headed for deeper water. Will def head back here soon, and hopefully the fish will be feeding harder next time......

i wish,it would be a new world record
most of the fish in this area of the lough look like this, some have big golden sores along their flanks.might be something to do with the water clarity :?: :!:

Well done Davy, that's a great fish you caught.
I have fished Strangford a few times for the mullet but didn't have any joy. It was a few years ago mind you, maybe it has got better since then. Must give it ago again sometime.
Nice picture too - well, of the fish!!! :D Only joking.

cheers everyone... after saturdays session i was starting to think i`d never get another mullet but thankfully i got one in the net 8)
as colin said its mad to think there was only one fish caught out of well over 1000 fish
they usually feed well at this mark, but i spose its early in the season....

Davy, let me know where you are going at the weekend. I could join you, I could do with a laugh and I reckon watching you trying to catch mullet would do the trick!!!
