New PB Thornie

#1 Post by ronanohal »

Location: Wexford
Date: 20/06/09
Time: 16:00 - 17:30, 21:30 - 02:00
Bait: Mackerel at 4pm, Frozen peeler, lug and sandeel for night session

Had a blast at a tope to catch the last hour of high tide at the Point - couple of rattles from doggies but nothing interested really. Plenty of big mullet around though.

Moved location for the night session. Fished low tide up. Conditions looked perfect for hounds - flat calm and still warm. Had one pennel out as far as i could cast (not very far) baited with crab and decided to fish a 2 hook clipped down with sandeel and lug in a bit closer in the hopes of picking up a bass - no surf so wasn't too hopeful for the bass.
Picked up my first ever thornback ray after about 30 mins on the lug. Spirits were high and settled into it, changing over to crab on both rods after about an hour. By 1am with no further bites but baits coming back cleaned I switched one rod to a scratching rig and picked up a tiny flounder. Decided to persevere with the idea that the hounds would have to pass sooner or later but by 2am with not even a sniff I packed it in. Next time...
Oh yeah, my first thornie and now my new PB was at least 2oz. Maybe 2.5. Can only improve from there eh?

I know. I couldn't believe it when i saw it. Had to get a pic of it beside the weight cos i figured no-one would believe the size - for the opposite reasons to usual. Good to know there's a few down that way. Reckon I'll be back to target them next time i'm out around low tide.
