Mullet problems 3!

where to start have tried the last few days for at least 4 hours a day using bread i have even pre baited with bread in those mesh bags, nothing the mullet dont show any interest at all i am starting to think there not mullet they are constantly jumping out of the water so my mind was working over time and i saw an article where the author mentioned that smaller mullet eg thin lipped, or golden grey tend to jump for no reason could this be whats in front of me or am i going crazy

Have you tried the flesh of a mackerel. I met an old guy years ago down at the coal quay dun laoghaire. Lots of mullet there and a few fishing for them but he was the only one catching them. He was using very light gear with a balsa wood float but he wasn't fishing high up where the mullet where he was down about 6-8ft under them most of the time. I tried it myself and using his technique of only putting the darkest flesh of the mackerel (no skin) on the hook really worked. you can't really cast hard though the flesh falls off easily. I use to live down dun laoghaire pier on my summer holidays from school handlining for mackerel with just a line, hook and a mackerel strip. One time I was dragging the scalp across the top of the water and a big mullet of about 8lb took the bait I'll never forget the run, 10lb line cut into my fingers badly but I got him in. It would be worth a try let us know if it works?

try pre baiting for a few days so that they get there confindence up and try to do it at the same state of tide or day and after a while they will feed like crazy when you put in your bait

Ask around - you could probably get a good deal on half a ton of pre-owned semtex.

what sort size are they?? they could be golden grey if they are small,you could try small worm baits and see if they take it

Mostly small with some fairly large could i float the worms or would i have to modify a mepps spinner??

Ok tried and failed again tonight even though it was a really big tide this is staring to drive me crazy i think half the problem is that i caught my first mullet so easily because they are used to scraps from tourists now its really getting me down , dug soom rag and lug today but how do i go about fishing this i presume with flaot but surely not with a size 8 - 12 hook ???????

hooked 4 mullet in dunmore harbour last year on some haddock that was no where near fresh at least 2 days off id say might be worth a shot

You are probably right about the tourists feeding them. I have yet to catch an Irish one but I got two small ones while on holidays in Crete earlier this month on bread. The mullet would swim into the harbour at lunch time and diners in a row of restaurants along the harbour walls would throw in bread which they devoured. As soon as it quitened down after lunch the mullet were gone.

Maybe the thing to do is to keep throwing in bread for a week or so until they cop on that it is edible. But refrain from fishing until they are confident enough to start feeding on it. I have thought about doing that myself but didn't have the time/patience.

I thinkk your on the right track there rockhunter off to lidl to clesr out there bread section , hopefully il get one soon i got a few other marks to try as i got some tips yesterday from a very helpful guy in cork angling and outdoor center
