Time spent fishing is never time wasted...
2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

BB are superb fighters. I rate them as amongst the best scrappers in our seas. I used to get them in Jersey, when I went there every year with the Croydon Club to boat fish. They'd turn up from time to time on the South Coast of England too. Having returned to Donegal, they and Bass are the two fish I miss most... :(
Sorry I can't help you with tips for finding them around Ireland. But they are mighty tasty! :D

hi dave
pity about last weekend we had good fishing with 38 bass 15 bream inc. the 3lber submitted to theI.F.C.A.
if you do decide to give it i go fish the bigger tides
fishing poor in any east wind s.w. is the best
fish till 1 hour after H.W.
seen 10 lb bass that a kid took while spinning 11/8 niec fish
the next 2 months will see a lot of large bass taken spinning down near the point
let me know how u get on

Gilthead Sea Bream (GHSB)
GHSB appear to have established themselves in Irish waters in recent years. Prior to this, they were regarded as rare. The following articles may be of interest:
Quigley, D.T. (2002) Sea Breams in Irish Waters
Sherkin Comment No. 31: 12
Fahy, E., Green, P. & Quigley, D.T.G. (2005) Juvenile gilthead sea-bream Sparus aurata L. on the south coast of Ireland.

I would like to hear from any anglers who have caught any unusual fish and/or species

GHSB Reprints
Hi Arthur,
The reprints are not available on-line, but I can fax or post them to you if you want.
I'd be grateful if you could possibly keep a record of each GHSB that you catch, recording details such as date, location, method, weight and total length. You could email the details to me as you acquire them.
Best Regards,
Rarefish

Bream
Hard to say where they’ll end up. The EFSA record is a whopping 16.4lb (France). I saw fish close to this in the aquarium in Barcelona (magnification of tanks taken into consideration) there were some huge fish there! The UK record is 9lb odd so I would imagine the Irish weights will certainly approach that.
That said, I hear Rob McClean is lobbying government to have bream protected and the catching of them banned!!!! :D :D
I suppose size will have to do with available feeding. I’d say water temp would have a bearing as well.
I wonder what will happen to the Cork Harbour stock. They got a bit of a hammering last year. As the season progressed there were less bream around but the size was bigger. Who knows what will happen when they return, hopefully they’ll bring buddies!!

I saw those fish too Jim - massive buggers!!
I caught a few different bream species in the harbour there before I got thrown out by the police
Might drop down to target giltheads specifically this year Arthur rather than the usual bass trip. What time of year do you think would be best to target the big lads?
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.
