Species ID

I am just back from a couple of weeks holiday in Crete.
I did a bit of shore fishing there and need IDs on a few species.

I guess Species 1 is a blenny of some sort - anybody any idea on what it is called.

Species 4 looks like some species of bream with razor sharp spines on its fins (ouch :twisted:

)

spieces 2 looks like a small jack or something and did you get anything bigger that them because they are tiny

No. 3 is a rainbow wrasse. The mediterranean one. If you google rainbow wrasse you'll get a load of different types

Thanks Mick,
If that is a Rainbow Wrasse then what is this one (Species 5). I had thought species 5 was a rainbow wrasse but having looking it up on Fishbase species 3 definitely looks to be a rainbow wrasse.

yep bang on,

1st first if definitley a type of blenny,
2nd could be a pony fish, not sure
4th is a rabbit fish (siganus doliatus)

A rabbit fish :shock:

I did a Google search - it has poisonous spines - no wonder it hurt so much when I got a prink from one of its dorsal spines (through the teacloth) :twisted:

But great fighters for their size - every time a caught one I thought it was going to be a much bigger fish.

Looking on fishbase I reckon Species 5 is a Comber. Anybody any thoughts on that?

Frank I knew you were dreading the bass ban but don't you think going all the way to Crete to fish was excessive!!!!!!!!

Looks like you had a good time though. I'll have to bring a rod on my next holiday. Fair play.

Going as far as Crete was the only way I could cure the bass withdrawal symptoms :lol:
