Ornate wrasse variations

I am just back from a holiday in Crete. See report viewtopic.php?f=13&t=21772
I caught several ornate wrasse which displayed two distinct patterns, some had vertical blue stripes along the body the others only had one stripe just below the head. There was also a difference in the morphology of the tail fins. Is this a male/female difference or are they two sub-species?

Interesting mate, I am over in Lanzarote atm andc caught a few ornate wrasse today, I got a pic of 1 I will keep a look out. Is there any point in fishing the bottom, on the clean stuff or is it all done by the float? I have had some success with the gg mullet, all good craic.

Some species there prefer to feed on or close to the bottom - you have better chance of picking up a few parrot fish and various bream species close to the bottom. In Crete I found that by very slowing moving the bait just off the bottom it encouraged the fish to bite harder, rather than just nibble at the bait - I reckon the same technique should work in Lanzarote.

I did a bit of beach fishing in Lanzarote on the long beach on the northwest side of the island - can't remember the name of it now - I had a few strong bites but no hook ups, so I have no idea of what was biting on the bait.

Also if you are fishing off the basalt flows there are a lot of deep crevases just off the shore - drop a line into those and you will pick up a few fish - last year I hauled a good size moray eel out of one of those. But there will be a lot of other species hiding in there.

Well done on the mullet - did you manage to sneak one out of a harbour? - I tried that last year but got chased off by a security man

Funny today I was fishing in the afternoon and then the local rolled in and were fishing hard on the bottom, they were cleaning up, with a load of species, they worked in pairs, if they snagged the other threw the snorkel on and went and cleared the snag

So went to arrecife to tackle shop and got a few bits to give it a go tomorrow.
