bait + our dog = near disaster!

#1 Post by rustyhookthomas »

keeping this as short as possible, i came back from a short fishing trip with about 20 lug i had dug down the shellybanks area. i quickly dropped everything out the back and started to put my gear away and noticed the lid on the lug was off the bucket and the weed on the ground beside it! strange i thought, how did that happen? anyway instead of fixing it first i hung my waders up to dry/air..
back to the lug to find the bucket empty :( :( :!:
the bloody dog! s*it, i completely forgot how nuts he is for fish.
he eats a diet of salmon & rice dogfood and even goes nuts when we have fish for dinner.
reckoned i was in for a few smelly days :( two days all was ok and then
my normally energetic staffy was wrecked, puddles of liquid poo and the stench was like nothing i ever smelt before!
the poor thing could hardly walk, thank god my wife and kids weren't there.
thankfully he's perking up a bit now after rehydrating and fasting for 24hrs.
i'm back feeding him and the poos are firmer and nearly normal again. i also "wormed" him no pun intended :)
my bait normally goes into the fridge (very cool wife who also likes to fish :D ) but i wanted to repackage it to keep it fresh.
nearly a horrible end to my family's loyal and loving dog!!!!!
hope this prevents it from happening to others!

My lab is also very fond of seafood of any kind have to watch him very carefully on the beaches.
He once picked up a baited trace left by some wa%*er and the vet had to put him out to take hook out.
He also had a bit of a stomach problem after eating some manky dogfish left on beach before I could get the damn thing away from him, not pretty having to clean up after them eh?
Glad to hear the dog was ok eventually a lesson well learnt for you. :D

The day after the juvenile qualifiers were on the slob bank last year or the year before my lab picked up some squid that someone had left behind. Same reaction for 2 days.

I don't have a dog but if i did it would be the whiniest moaning mutton headed dog in fact it wouldn't let me bring a mackerel into the house it would go "woof woof " and that would mean "get that f***ing mackerel out"

Was out fishing for cod about 3 years ago when my father came to pick me up from the beach. He had brought our dog with him and she was playing and running around on the beach. However, I had been slow to pack away my gear and still had a baited (lugworm) trace hanging from my tripod (I'm sure ye can see where this is going). Turning my back for a second, I heard a crash as the tripod fell over and I spun around to find my dog had swallowed a hook very deeply and was trying to run up the beach dragging to tripod with her. Suffice to say, I fecked my gear in the car in record time and drove like a lunatic to the vets. Luckily she passed the hook a week later and was none the worse for wear. However, I now always get nervous when dogs come over sniffing round my gear

What gets me is when you go out for a bit of fishing watching your rod tip for bites then some a**shole,s dog comes along way ahead of the owner not on a lead.Next minute you know he,s swiped you bait grrrrrr and the owner seems to think its a laugh but when i tell them it could have swollowed a baited hook trace leading to expensive vet bills THAT I WONT BE PAYING,then the look of awe. Some dont even learn when on the return trip the dogs still up to the same, not on a lead,I THOUGHT DOGS IN PUBLIC PLACES HAD TO BE ON A LEAD

i think its best to be safe and sorry - as soon as you see the dog - shout at it and run him - if you are unlucky and he gets to the bait when your back is turned - educate the owner

its far better them thinking your a boll ! x rather than the dog having hooks in its gob and they know they should have the mutt on a leash - it always amazes me how the look at you like youve 10 heads if you shout at their dog - yet your doing them a big favour!!!

glad to hear your wee dog was alright in the end man. our own dog ruined a beach session for me at the start of the year too. sat for over four (fishless) hours watching motionless rod tips. but as soon as it got dark both rods started bouncing away with double hook ups. now i started to get excited at the prospect of a busy evening session, but my mutt had different ideas. while i was unhooking the fish she got her face into the bait bag and snaffled a box of squid, packet of mackie fillets and a half pound of rag :x :x :x . so the fishing got cancelled and i spent the next 4 days mopping up liquid poop and dog vomit    . now we watch her like a hawk when she's out with us as she still likes to have a sniff round the bait bag and has lernt nothing from her experience    dogs, eh!.
