whitepark bay and waterfoot beach fri 5th june 09

#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People: me and jordan

Duration: whitepark bay 4.30pm to 9pm.... waterfoot 10.15pm to 2am

Tide: all states

Weather: 15mph winds, sunny and no rain

Bait: lug, mack and squid

Rigs: 3 hook flappers

Results: whitepark bay, me 1 flounder. jordan, blank.... waterfoot, me 9 flounder and 1 plaice. jordan 8 flounder

Report: we had been planning a camping/fishing trip all week and jordan has still to get his first turbot. so it was off to whitepark bay and on arrival there was a pretty decent surf which really would'nt suit the turbot, but we got the 4 rods baited up and cast out anyway. jordan went on a beach combing excursion while i got the tent set up and the kelly kettle on the boil (still serving us well neil  ). we had a coffee and noticed all the lines were pointing to the 9 oclock position almost back on the shore :? :? :? :? . so i had a look in the tackle bag and found 4, 7oz gripper leads and we reeled in , re-baited and cast out again. this time they seemed to do the trick and the baits held firm :P :P . they would have needed to as they are the heaviest grippers we got   . it was a bit quiet until i noticed that tell tale flattie twitch on my rod at distance and reeled in a wee flounder. on closer inspection he was an odd sort of shape :? :? :? . he had a stumpy head, squat body and a strange wavy lateral line where it should have arched over the pectoral fin. must have been some sort of growing deformity as a fry or something  . anyhow we both baited up and re-cast. i thought jordan was getting a run as the line on the rod he just cast out had swept under my 2. he could feel weight and reeled in a monster weed fish      . there must have been 10lb of weed on his trace   , but i did'nt get to laugh too long as both of my rods appeared to be doing the same     . the weed was a real pain and seemed to appear from nowhere. after casting out you were lucky to be able to count to 100 before all your gear was washed back up on the beach 100 yards to your left       . so we quit fishing for an hour and a half to see if it would pass but it just got worse     . a serious rethink was in order as we were supposed to fish this mark overnight but it was unfishable. so by 9pm we packed everything away including the tent and made the long hike back to the motor and went to our old back up, waterfoot    . this wee mark never let us down and i got a load of plaice at it last week which would be another new one of 2009 for junior  . we got to the peir to find it packed and plan B quickly became plan C   . we set up on the beach but any ideas of camping were out the window as junior was beginning to fade fast. so jordan reckoned we'd just fish on until his eyes began to cross      . as it turned out we had a blast with flounder after flounder and one up'smanship kicked in with jordan taking the lead then me getting in front and so on. by the end it was 8-6 to jordan but my last 2 casts produced doubles of flounder and flounder and a plaice     . and the last 2 flounder were a pretty decent size with a 28cm and 30cm to round the session off. so for the first time in a while i beat junior 10 to 8 :P :P :P . great sport after a disasterous start. roll on the next session :D :D :D all the fish went back apart from the big flounder who had taken the hook deeply and was bleeding like a stuck pig. so you can guess whats on the menu for lunch today

Shame about the camping guys.

Wasn't expecting to see a report up til later in the afternoon mate. Unlucky about the change of plan and location, however looked like a ya gotta few nice flounder for your efforts. How was the weather up that way? I was going to go for a mullet hunt but weather and tides sucked.

cheers roger. in our haste to get out i forgot the 15mph winds were onshore     so they made the moderate swell increase to near double and all the weed was washing up on the beach instead of going out to sea

cheers mark, some of the best average sizes of flats from that mark in a while 8) 8) we just hope that they keep getting bigger as the summer rolls on :D :D

cheers man, sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet and move on when a mark becomes unfishable. but we have a good knowlege of marks on that stretch of coast now and our backup's go to about a plan "G" now if needed

cheers marky. no doubt he will    and the flounder fillets were lovely steamed on a bed of chicken flavoured rice. yum, yum, yum    only problem is now that jordan wants to catch a few big flounder for eating now.   and seeing as how a good eating size flounder is as common as hen's teeth it might be a while before on graces our kitchen again

dry but a bit more wind than what was forecast :( did you get a go at the mullet on sunday man?. i'll neet to get credit for the mobile today and give you a call mate.

cheers minty. we got off to a bit of a disaster and all that moving about was a bit of a pain  but we came good in the end :P :P . and the turbot hunt continues      jaysus, at this rate i'll have to go out and catch one, keep it in a bucket and sneak it onto his hook when he's not watching          and yes jordan was the new cameraman,,,,,,,, but that i'll not last long

cheers don, just goes to show if you're willing to move around a bit you'll find the fish eventually      and jordan had me beaten fair and square until i pulled out 2 flukey doubles at the end :D :D :D . but jordan reckons you can beat a good angler, but you can't beat a lucky angler

thanks dave. it had to happen one day    . by the time the heavy rain and winds moved in up here we were tucked up in bed fast asleep. so mabey the weed at the first mark did us a favour in the end     . i never brought the camcorder as when we go beach fishing we always seem to manage to bring a few kilos of sand home in everything :? :? :? :? :? and sand + camcorder = expensive repair

thanks eddie. our camera is a lidl cheapy digital :D i think it's a vivitar 4.0 megapix. it has taken some abuse over the last 3 years and is still going strong. i know bugger all about cameras so i just keep it on the automatic settings and the job appears to be a good'un :D :D :D :D. we'll be fishing the comp on sunday but a few of us are heading up on friday to fish fanad, lenan, pollan bay or rathmullan. that should keep us busy until the comp starts on sunday afternoon
