Question: I am just wondering - can you catch Mackerel on spinning at night? I just wanted to know since i think spinning is mostly fish eyesight unlike bottom fishing where the bait scent is the factor for attracting fish. I maybe wrong just curious on this aspect.
Thanks

Re: Night fishing mackerel?
I think (think) when you loose the light the macks go off. They are primarily a sight hunter, like many pelagic fish. I've heard luminous lures / beads can help when night fishing, but I've never tried it.
let us know how you get on.

Re: Night fishing mackerel?
I caught over 60 macks one night two years ago on bright lumo feathers but i would say that maybe a german sprat would work aswell

Re: Night fishing mackerel?
I have seen them caught at night on Donaghadee harbour. The lights at the end of the harbour seem to attract and hold fish in that area.

Re: Night fishing mackerel?
Same here - I have caught them at the end of piers with lights. You tend to catch a lot of Scad that way too.

Re: Night fishing mackerel?
why not try some glow grubs, their fairly cheap. shine a light on them for a few minutes and they glow for a good while. just slide them up a hook and have them about a foot from a light weight. it should work for macks. i havent tried it yet but did buy some last week to try out.

Re: Night fishing mackerel?
I would imagine Macks need to be able to see their prey OR YOUR LURES.
'Cause as far as I am aware they do not have a lateral line to detect movement in dark water.

Re: Night fishing mackerel?
If you put a strip of mackerel / squid on your feathers you'll have no problem after dark

Re: Night fishing mackerel?
a nice shinny brite silver lure/spinner will work as it catches moonlight and will give off a glint in the water as long as your not fishing to deep also tinsel type traces should work the same way......
but fom my own experience's of diving at night, the plankton stick to wetsuits and would become slightly luminous when swimming at depth making me look like a big glow stick
, so maybe it's the same when using feathers etc
