waterfoot peir and antrim rock mark 28th and 29th may

#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People:waterfoot, just me. rock mark me, jordan, dawsey, ronald then minty

Duration:thursday 12pm-5pm friday 4pm 11pm

Tide: all states

Weather: sunny and mild winds

Bait: rag, mack, squid

Rigs: pulleys and simple 3 way swivel to 1 hook and a lead

Results: thursday 6 plaice, 1 long spined sea scorpion and a 1lb pollack. friday around 16 dogs between us, a couple of shannys and jordan lost a 15lb conger

Report:

THURSDAY WATERFOOT
i had the afternoon to myself so i got a run up to waterfoot peir to see what was about. i put one rod out at distance on a pulley with a 3/0 loaded with a whole squid and a mackeral fillet which kept coming back in untouched and all the rest was caught on rag. the plaice were around in good numbers just 50 yards out and the pollack at the end was a bonus as i have'nt got one in a while. i did get a bit of a panic at the end when i noticed the car keys were still in the ignition and the battery was flat   . and despite a few lads giving me a bump it was'nt for kicking over. thank god the lads tending to the salmon cages came in and one of them had a jumper pack which started he first go :P :P :P :P . i was having notions of my wee session turning into an overnighter

DAY 2 ANTRIM ROCK MARK (AKA THE DOG HOUSE)
after an unsucessful look around a few county down mullet marks in the morning me, dawsey and ronald picked jordan up from school and set out to the mark to see what was about. with 8 rods out we were bound to get a better idea of what was lurking around this place and ronald was first off the mark with a dog, then another, then another. dawsey then got a timid knock and landed his first ever doggie    . i think he got another 2 before jordan got into the action landing a wee dog himself. both dawsey and ronald lost a couple of heavy fish that got down into the kelp.  we'll never know what they were but they had a good bit of weight to them which was even more of a sickner   minty arrived down and got set up next to me and got a bait out in eager anticipation after his 5lb huss at this mark on his last outing :P then came the highlight (or lowlight in jordan's case). jordan struck into something that put his 11ft bass spinning rod to it's absolute test. there was a bit of a tug of war between him and the fish until he started making ground on it. ronald helped him to pump and wind it in and a bloody big 15lb conger broke the surface just in front of us for all to see      jordan carefully got it over the kelp bed without getting snagged up. then disaster struck. i had the start of the trace in my hand and the eel was no more than 2 feet from me as the 20lb snood length snapped and the eel was lost     :( :( :( :( :( . the rigs we were using were just not ment for conger eels. 20lb snoods on size 1/0 abereen's a'int exactly conger gear. then to make matters worse the eel just sat on the surface of the water taunting us for about 2 mins before slinking away down into the kelp never to be seen again    i've always laughed about not having to buy a landing net as we never get anything that would justify it but you can all guess what jordan has given me orders to go out and buy first thing on monday when the tackle shop opens again      . i really felt for him as his wee heart was broken and that would have easily his biggest ever shore caught fish to date. but he just resigned himself to putting it down to another story of the one that got away

cheers man. waterfoot seems to be carpeted with wee plaice at the moment, and jordan caught more than me (again  )

it's one of those marks where you can park on the peir beside where you were fishing. the downside of it was not bothering to take the keys outta the ignition      now i've no stereo as the things locked into safe mode as the battery was completely dead    . i'll have to hoke out all the documents for the car to see if there's a code for it somewhere   but it was nowhere near the despair that junior felt as the conger got away      . we were all truely gutted for him as he worked so hard to first get it to the surface and then over the kelp only to watch it snap the snood and escape

nicefish wrote:Dog Day Afternoon comes to mind  hard luck Jordan on the Conger, brilliant sessions lovely Plaice and Dogs.

cheers man. 2 great days fishing. the fish were plentyfull and the banter was flying thick and fast :D :D :D :D :D :D

cheers minty. jordan was at his usual form beating me again too as i only managed one dog myself     . that's why i go out for the odd sesh on my own. at least then i stand a chance of getting a few fish          most of the dogs at that mark are very dark if not black :| :| :| .

rab01 wrote:Well done again lads. Seems to be a good number of mutts at your mark. Unlucky with the eel Jordan but you did get it to the surface.

cheers rab. jordan made the point that in a lot of the fishing programmes on tv if you touch the trace the fish counts            . but he was still distraught that it got away. we had to hold him back as he was for going in after it     . i should'nt have let him watch the tv show with the guys wrestling the sharks outta the tuna pens in australia. he reckoned he coulda taken the eel on and won

thanks bryan, that's what i was telling him. it's still early days for the congers. we have'nt even set out to target them yet. i'll get him up to garron point for a go at them and he can seek his revenge

Good work lads, looks like you had a great couple of days fishing there. The little videos are great, keep them coming. Hard luck to Jordan on the Conger, he must have been gutted especially after seeing it on the surface but there is plenty of time for him to catch another before the year is out.
