GREYSTONES ROCKS 30-05-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:ME

Duration:4-30pm-10pm

Tide:4-30pm approx

Weather:sunny,

Bait:rag,mack,squid

Rigs:flappers, mini rig

Results:flounder, dab, whiting, blenny

Report:After an unsuccessful smoothie hunt during the week( report: long walk, sand dunes, horses, nudists, rough sea, 2 doggies, long walk, home   ) i was hoping for some easy fishing at the rocks in Greystones. I was completely stressed out by the time i got there as the M50 was choc-a-bloc, with me passing 3 accidents before Bray   . Anyways things improved when i got to the rocks and saw there was only one angler there despite all the cars parked up   . I met the guy a few times before and he told me he hadnt had a touch all afternoon. I set up with 2 rods, 1 at distance in the hope of a plaice , and the small rod in close for mini species. I got a blenny on the small rod on rag fairly soon after i arrived but that was it for the afternoon   . Lovely day, nice view, good conversation but crap fishing  . Before i knew it there were people all around me on the rocks, reading, posing, sunbathing, a barking dog caught my attention and i turned around just in time to see him make a dive on my bait. Luckily for me, his lead ran out about a yard before the bait   . The usual posse of tourists arrived and asked the usual questions, "is this a good place for sea bass, how you catch him?". I only caught 3 here last year and considered myself very lucky so i wasnt going to go into detail with them about tactics, tides, bait, tackle etc so i just said "waterford for glass and bass" . A very nice guy whose name i didnt get but who worked for Dublin bus asked me would i mind him setting up beside me, nice to be asked and there was lots of room. AT one stage i felt a presence behind me and turned to find a toddler girl beside me on the edge of the rocks   . I grabbed her and took her away from the edge and I looked around to see who she was with and it turned out the father was texting on his phone about 20 yds away  , some people   ,,,she could have fallen in very easily and its not a place you could jump in after her as theres rocks under the surface. I decided that my usual "eyes" stare wouldnt suffice so i gave him a bit of a lecture in front of everyone, he soon got the child and scarpered off. All this action was the only action for the afternoon and i realised i wasnt going to get any bites till dusk  . Eventually i got a small dab, followed by a flounder and i decided to stay a while longer.

A couple of guys arrived with a kid and started to set up their gear. I was wondering where they would cast out as there wasnt much room but as soon as "Dublin bus" left his spot for a min to bait up they were in like Flynn and bullied their way into his spot  ,,,,very cheeky,, and to make it worse they wouldnt even make eye contact so as i could give them the "eyes " stare   . Seriously though, you wouldnt mind if they asked, we would have both moved up a bit to accommodate them. Didnt want to create a scene as the young kid was fishing, but they knew we werent pleased and just ignored us. They left and i was going to say to them that if they stayed another half hour they'd probably catch something as it was getting dusk but seeing as they ignored us,,,,i stayed mumm     .Some polish folks got their spot and soon after they landed some whiting and a dog, which they took pics of and put back, fair play. Soon after this we started getting whiting, which i noticed were a nice golden colour and these much maligned fish put a respectable number on our catch. I left happy enough but reading through this report i think i might have a few "issues"  .

nice fishing dave :P the fish must have been waiting for you to arrive before they came on the feed     . the toddler must have given you a fright thow     . as for the ignorant anglers pushing in, i think a conversation that begins with the line " yo, chum. are those eyes painted onto the front of your face or what? ". usually sorts em out    . but it will be par for the course over the coming months    . time to head out to far away rock marks me thinks

Good work Dave, potentially saved a little girl, endured the ignorant eijits and still managed to winkle out a few fish. :D I must have just missed you at Greystones Dave, same as yourself I hit that traffic on the M50 and crawled for a while so I decided I'd stop off at Greystones on my way to Wicklow. It was a beautiful day for it and there wasn't many anglers there either when I arrived but I wasn't getting bites so I didn't stay too long and decided to head on to try Wicklow Harbour, pity now as I wouldn't have minded a bit of banter. By the sounds of things it was a good thing you were there to catch the kid, I've seen little kids running wild around those rocks before whilst their parents stood idly back, it really makes you wonder. As for the ignorant eijits that try to squeeze in on your spot and cast over your lines, unfortunately its that season and its only going to get worse when the mackerel arrive. The mess they leave behind is the worst part, I was just out for a walk on the East Pier in Dun Laoghaire and the place is a kip already.

How'd you get on in Wicklow harbour Dave, it was a toss up between there and Greystones for me, then the traffic made my mind up for me. My missus worries about me on those rocks never mind toddlers

Unlucky on your smoothie hunt earlier in the week, I got dragged all the way down to south wexford for the same wild goose chase, err I mean smoothies hunt last night, not a single fish :(

Traffic was absolutely mental around the N11 and brittas bay, I'd say its a place to avoid at weekends with the good weather.

Welldone on getting a few fish

The traffic nearly made my mind up as well, it was awful on the way down and after my little stop off in Greystone I just headed down the back roads to Wicklow to avoid the traffic. I was just fishing with light gear in close for the minis, got a few Tompot Blenny, some small Wrasse and a little Pouting. A bit of fun especially on the light gear.
