Bulloch 24th May

#1 Post by beebub2 »

Where: Bullock Harbour, Dalkey Island

Crew: Me & Stephen8wood

Duration: 3 hrs 8am - 11am

Tide: Rising

Weather: Amazing. Beautiful sunny morning, sea as flat as a pancake until we were heading back in when it got a little choppy, but just a great morning.

Bait: Macs, rag, sandeel

Rigs: flowing trace, hokkais, squid rigs, feathers

Results: Me: Pollack (6) whiting!!! (1) Stephen Pollack (2) Codling (1) Ballan Wrasse (2)

Report: What a morning. We decided to rent a small boat from Bulloch Harbour for a few hours and we couldn’t have picked a better day. The lady who brings the boat around for you and shows you the ropes is hilarious. There were two lads taking the boat in front of us who got on her wrong side. Firstly they got into the boat before she was ready for them. This started her shouting at them and it didn’t stop until they were gone. Just before she showed them how to use the engine she said to one fella, 'Sigh síos anseo'. He looked at her like she’d ten heads. I doubt very much they he had much Irish if you know what I mean. She started to tell him to cut the engine when fishing because the lines can get caught in the motor. ‘I know’ the foolish fellow chipped in. ‘You don’t know!! She screamed. ‘Don’t tell me you know because you don’t!!’. Just before they left she pointed out the cloth and bucket and said ‘see that cloth & bucket?? You might as well use it to clean the boat while you’re out there, because you’re not going to catch any fish. Now go on!’ They didn’t know what had hit them or where to look. She’s hilarious. She was nice as pie to us.

We stayed fairly nearby because we knew we weren’t going to be out that long. We started around the back of Dalkey Island and moved around the island for a few hours drifting all the while.

I caught a few good sized Pollack which gave a half decent fight which was good fun, I also caught a blasted pin whiting, will the ever give me peace??. Stephen caught a couple of nice Ballan Wrasse on the flowing trace.

Below is the Wrasse and a photo of Colimore Harbour from the boat with a wee seal on a rock. There really is little better than a few hours quiet fishing drifting on a boat in weather like we had today. Top, top class. Also enclosed is a photo of some of the Pollack, just in case you weren't aware of what they look like! :D  Mmmm.

It was a great morning and decent fishing for May. Just one thing, the lady who looks after the boats is a good laugh but takes no crap. She calls a spade a spade you might say. She really looked after us though. As I was getting ready to get aboard I dropped my flask on the slip, it was almost in the water and she lunged for it, slipping and almost kanckering herself in the process, but she saved it and handed it back without looking for a word of gratitude. I really don't want to offend anyone and I'm not getting up on my high horse but it might be better to be a bit more careful with the comments.

Other than that, tight lines.

Like I said, she was nice as pie to us (Phew, that gets me off the hook next time I encounter her :D ). But I was serious when I said she's hilarious, becasue she is. The lads she was shouting at just didn't quite get the irony to her tone (probably because they, in all likelyhood only understood 10% of what she was saying and that excludes the Irish!). In reality she was just messing with their heads.

Boats are €20 an hour. The group behind us had 6 big fellas fishing. She got them a slightly bigger boat, I'm not sure if the bigger boat is more expensive, but you'd reasonably comfortably fit 4 in the boat we were in, so it's not too expensive. It's amazing the difference even a little bit of depth can do to your chances of catching bigger fish.

I've enjoyed my first winter fishing, but there's little bit of a difference between standing on Whiterock beach in hail at 10pm in December and drifting at the back of Dalkey Island at 9am on a calm, warm sunny day in May!

Fairplay lads, its a great spot to fish with good weather, like ye say, beats freezing cold hands on a wet and miserable winter evening.

Had a few enjoyable sessions out of Bulloch last summer.

Next time your heading out drop me a line and I'll join you if ya dont mind, it will help to split the cost a bit :D and always nice to mix with a few other anglers from the forum

Weathers supposed to be fantastic this weekend

PS I like my Pollock fried in beer batter, but yours looked pretty tasty too.
