Kilteery Pier Limerick May 23, 2009 - What fish?

#1 Post by simplywabs »

People: Me & (My Daughter) Sofie

Duration: 16:15 - 19:00

Tide: rising

Weather: Wind / Sunny

Bait: Squid Heads

Rigs: 2 & 3 hook flappers

Results: (8) Dab, (1) Unknwon - Can you help identify?

Report: Drove back to Kilteery pier with my new fishing buddy. My 12 year old daughter Sofie. From the time we arrived I was hoping that she gets to catch something to make the fishing experience a memorable one. I gave her the 3 hook flapper with No. 4 hooks so as to increase her chance of landing at least one. Her first three bites were somewhat frustrating for her after reeling in blanks. My first catch was a small fish which I would need help in identifying.

At the first hour point the pressure is on me to put in her bait carefully and make sure any bite would be hooked and reeled in. Whoala! just after 17:00 she got her first Dab and was very happy... It started a good trend for her and she was able to get a total of six good sized Dabs, she was also happy releasing the Dabs after giving each catch a name and seeing them swim differently as a flat fish. I got photos on a couple of them. She was so happy that she wants to go with me everytime I go fishing now. Hehehe. It was an overall great experience for both of us.

Looks like a goby. There used to be a link on here somewhere to a book one of the guys produced showing species. Can't find it now, but perhaps one of the moderators knows where it is.
Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.

The worst time to have a heart attack is while playing charades! Specially if your friends are no good at it.

I'd say myself that its a rock goby, but its difficult to say for certain.

The above site is an excellent resource for species identification.

Thanks a lot. Based on the link you gave it really looks like a Goby. :) Very informative link.
