Rod & Reel for Conger!

Im looking for a rod and reel to do battle with conger from the rocks?
Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Mark,

I think a lot of people just use their boat rods from what I read in the reports.

A slosh 30 and a conoflex nemises plus slr 2002 would be up there with the best for that type of fishing or the penn noreaster combined with the 535 mag would also do but in all fairness i brought in conger up to 30 lbs on an old kenly popular floppy beach caster and an abu 6500ct loaded with 15lbs line so it you want brute force go for the better rods but if you want fun and a good fight use a lighter personaly I prefer the conoflex..............

may be a 50lb class boat rod and a penn 535gs loaded with 40lb line

I personally used to use an old 9ft solid glass spinning rod and a mitchell spinning reel loaded with 30lb line when fishing for them on the north antrim coast :D coped with anything that i hooked, had great fun using it especially when it bent to the handle on a bigger fish ! :lol:

Anything bigger than a 15lb class boat rod for shore conger is in my opinion a kill joy! not many places around the irish coast where your likely to hook anything much bigger than 40lb, though i did know where a conger lay that most people reckoned was close to the 100lb mark !! :shock: even the local trawler skipper said the same. I do know a few people lost rods etc because of it, then the harbour was changed/upgraded and it was never heard of after that.

I think boat rods are a bit short if you're trying to control a big fish in the rocks./ Personally I would go for the conoflex or similar just to have the length

Ah sorry, when i mentioned a 15lb class boat rod wasn't meaning exactly a boat rod more the rating of the rod.

Good beachcaster would be grand, like you said sometimes the extra length helps on the rocks especially if your unable to stand at the water edge.

But a good stiff solid glass spinning rod that will bend and bend is hard to beat for a bit of craic ! :lol: :lol:

I use an old Abu Ambassadeur Zoom, it's 13ft long and plenty strong for pretty much any conger you are likely to catch from the shore. Coupled to this, I use either a Daiwa sl20 or sl30.
