Help - Frozen Mac as bait

#1 Post by simplywabs »

A simple question - I hope someone could guide me on using a frozen mac as bait.

I've been trying to use frozen mac as bait but as time passes by and the mac gets thawed while I'm fishing the meat easily falls off. How do I use it? Is it the quality of Mac I have? Is it the size of Mac that I use as bait which matters.

My facts:

hook size: 2
rig type: 2 hook flapper & pennel pulley
Mac: Cut into strips and chunks 1 X 2 inches size on the pulley and 1 X 1 cm on the 2 hook flapper

I maybe comparing it with my favorite bait Squid heads. But I do like to experience the good catch a lot of the members here are posting using mac as bait.

Thanks

Yeah tackle shop will sell it, just ask for bait elastic, it's not like a band it would be more like thread.
If i'm freezing down mac i wrap it in newspaper which seems to keep it in good nick when it thaws out. If scratching
i will take a majority of the flesh off of the mackeral anyway.

another thing you may do is cut the mackeral up when still frozen and let it thaw out that why when your set up. (cut it when you arrive at your mark). the bait elastic is great for all soft baits like mussle etc.

I usd to find putting mack on a hassle too. But you soon get used to working with it. Plenty of elastc certainly helps. :D

Simplywabs, try tying a bit of white thread around the mackeral strip. This usually works for me. You should get a few extra casts out of each strip.
