Kilary dead

#22 Post by kieran »

Hi

Just talked to JAKES today and he wtalked to the crew at Scubadive West at Little Kilary - apparently the entire sea bed is littered with the carcases of dead fish caught in the red tide - rays, dogs and flatfish predominantly and full of crabs. Based on this I will fish a few marks in the next week or two and see how they perform and then come back with a final destination but on the basis of the discussion so far it will be 12 noon to 4 pm on Saturday 26th August somewhere on the western seaboard in North Galway or Mayo...

I know JAKES fished An Corraun two weeks back and won a competition with 6 thornbacks with 18 caught by around 12 anglers. It should have recovered by now although a good storm would be very helpful - can not remember the last time I was hoping for a storm in the middle of summer!

Okay? Jaysus, if I knew it would be this complicated, I'd have bought a boat!

:D :D

I'd be up for that. Will try and get down for both if possible. Shore on the Saturday and then boat on the Sunday, would make for a good weekends fun I'd think.

OK That makes three for the boat comp. Would need at least five. Any one else interested?

Mayo competition

Okay

On the boat question, it depends where you want to fish. You could not any better the John Brittain out of Clifden, which is reasonably close if we fish Little Kilary (I fished big Kilary on Sunday and it was okay, see report in boat section). The problem is that he is probably booked already...

There is a far bigger fleet in Clew Bay however - you could try Aaron O'Grady on Clare Island - check the charter boat section - he will collect from Roonagh Quay and being new to the game, as a skipper, he is very keen to please the customers. Aaron is well disposed towards the website (mention it or my name) and I have heard good reports from several anglers who've been out with him - it being a Sunday in August you will do well to find a charter free. There are loads of charters from Westport and further north and west out to Achill. The Westport / Newport based boats are better if the weather is a bit iffy as they can fish the islands channels and you can have a pot at the skate - perfect timing on that front. Both suffer from tidal harbours however.... MGH is exceptional but probably booked and I think she is charging 450 per day. Good Ray, flats and huss in the islands. John Johnstone is one I will wouch for personally, quiet spoken skipper, top boat, and he really knows the bay like the back of his hand - can put you into good codling and haddock fishing (ragworm essential for the latter on a flowing trace), or just about anything else, top notch pollack reef fishing out beside Clare Island. If any of you fancy shark fishing John is probably the best skipper around but you need a lumpy sea for that... and a stomach to match the conditions. I would LOVE to go but its my son's 5th birthday and my wife is working the night before.

On the shore competition side, it would help to know many are coming, and who is driving to avoid any transport issues. So sign up after this post. I've assumed that for social reasons Westport is the base! 8)

Saturday 27th August 2005 12:00 to 4:00 pm fishing, c. HT down.
Most likely venue will be Little Kilary (see scubadivewest for directions).

Unforunately my wife is working that night so I will not be present for the social aspect but if it were not for the fact that I am organising this, I would probably not be fishing it either... just as well I have this excuse!

BTW, I am NOT booking B&Bs for people, I will simply list useful numbers etc. here and you can arrange that with the proprietors.

Thanks

We currently have 3 maybe 4 for the boat. JD/Kieran can you post the sticky on the other bulletin boards to see if we can get any interest from non club members to particpate in a days or a 1/2 days boat trip out of Westport or thereabouts.

I don't think it is worth while going out on the boat with just 3 or 4 anglers.

For all other club members would you prefer to arrange another date for the next boat comp. I would like to hear any suggestions for venues and dates that might interest you. If you are not fussed where the venue is and have no preference for the date please let me know also. We have 30 members in the club and we want to accomodate all of you. Can I get a reponse from everyone even if it's just a quick note to say that you are not interested in fishing any boat comps. Feel free to PM me if you wish. By the way don't worry if you don't have boat equipment as the boats we will be chartering supply these.

Thanks,

Donal.

I doubt I'll be able to make either the shore or boat competition now lads. Apologies, I've little or no time to spare at present.

Venue / Boat options

#36 Post by kieran »

Hi all

I will put a message on the boat and places forums on the possibility of hiring a boat for Sunday 28th August 2005.

Recommend that people look at Westport at the base for social as well as venue specific reasons. If Rossanrubble is fishing well, we will go there, if not we will head for Little Kilary, or possibly a new mark recently uncovered in Big Killary - but I will share all of any reliable reports I get with you all...

B&Bs in Westport: http://westport.mayo-ireland.ie/WPbed.htm or you could just try http://www.ireland.ie

So we have four, with myself and possibly the brother making six for the competition. Come on people, how does the ad go "wake up to the west"!

Apologies lads,

I found out this morning that I need to attend a christening on the Sunday. That puts me out for the boat for definite and I am not 100% on the shore comp now either.

If anyone wants to go ahead with the boat let me know and I will see if I can get available places organised.

Sorry again,

Donal.
