Fenit Pier Kerry 17-May 2009

#1 Post by steveoel »

People: Myself and My Father

Duration: 7pm - 11pm

Tide: Moving in Fast

Weather: Strong winds and very heavy showers, Buckets of rain!!!

Bait: Mackeral and Razor

Rigs: Wishbone, 3 hook Ledger, Siler Feathers

Results: 1 Garfish, 1 herring? World Smallest Dab
9 million Spider Crabs!!!!!!Ahhhhh

Headed down to fenit despite the driving rain to try and get a few casts. The Sea facing side of the bridge was far too wild to cast into so casted inland. Set up some drifing feathers and sent out a wishbone rig and 3 hook ledger both baited with Mackeral and tipped with Razor. Bait was been stripped all sides and the spider crabs were being dragged in wholesale!!
The silver faethers seemed to work on the night and claimed a nice sized Garfish, 1 Herring?? or ay least thats what we reakon it was, and the world's smallest dab!!
Poor night all in all with the weather been as bad as it was and the millions of crabs around the place.

I was there meself. I didn't even catch a crab!

I saw someone land a garfish. Obviously you.
Weather was cat.

It was only my 3rd time fishing the pier. Both other times were during last week. Got a 67cm thornback late Tuesday evening on sandeel and a few dog fish on mackeral as well.

Is Fenit pier a good spot in general?
I hadn't been fishing in years until last week. I need all the help I can get.

Hi

Yeah that was me alright i'd say. Don't think there was much pulled in off the pier last night.
my personal view of the pier is that it can throw up the strangest and most wonderful things, or you can very easy blank there. Uusally fish there if i'm short on time or the weather is really bad, because its so handy with the car right beside you.

The crabs there just drive me crazy. Working on putting together some anti crab rigs so hopefully that will help the situation if i'm fishing there again.
Make sure and say hello if you see me fishing there again some time.

Do you fish any other spots around kerry??
I try make south kerry off as often as i can for marks down that way. Failing that Barrow or the SPA can throw up some good fish.

I take it fishing is still allowed on the pier ? , including the end? , I was there last year and there was a notice at the entrance saying no fishing.

you can fish off either side of the bridge but fishing off the actual harbour is not allowed. There is some really good deep water there and i think it would be a great spot but it's no longer allowed.  you can walk down to the statue at the end of the harbour but there is no fishing.

Yeah was very happy with the Garfish
The weather was crazy that night, wind and waves had the rods going constantly, bite detection was fairly hard.

do any of you guys realise that spider crabs feed up til the last stages of peeling, if you check a leg as you catch em you may find a prime juicy bait or two. on the south coast of england baited drop nets are used specifically to nail them and use for bait, dunno what species would refuse juicy peeling spiders but down there they were used for bass mainly i think
