fahan sunday 17th may 09

#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People: me and dawsey

Duration: 3.30pm - 8.30pm

Tide: last 2 hours of the ebb to the first 2 hours of flood

Weather: 15mph winds. sunny and dry

Bait: mack, lug, rag, squid and sand eel

Rigs: flappers

Results: ME: 2 thornies, 7lb 14oz and 7lb 8oz. DWASEY: 2 thornies 3lb 14oz and 5lb 15oz

Report: after being laid up for a week with the flu i finally felt well enough to get back out for a session :D . dawsey has been at me for a while about heading out to a mark where he could come into contact with something that weighed more than the lead on the end of his rig       so a road trip to fahan was in order to try to get him his first ray or dog. we had only arrived and got set up as a wee dog came over and cocked it's leg on our bag of bait     forgot about the advice don gave me regarding the dogs up that way    . there were 4 other anglers fishing to our left and the guy closest to us got a dog and ray on his first cast so things were looking up :P dawsey and i were chatting about bite indication with rays as his rod got a solid knock and he landed his first ever thornie. mission accomplished!!! after a few quick pics and a spell on the scales he was returned none the worse to fatten up and grace someone else in the future. then it went a bit quiet until the wee spinning rod i had out for flounder was almost pulled clean from the sand spike    i started to reel in and felt a good bit of weight on the end, and my biggest thornie to date broke the surface. he weighed in at 7lb 14oz and made my measure look quite small in the pic        it was one of the best fights i've had from a fish in a while. the rod's cast weight is only 15-20 grammes and it was loaded with 15lb line, so it was a great scrap :P  . from there on out i did'nt care what happened for the rest of the session as we both got a ray each and were more than happy    i began to rebait the rod i just landed the fish on as my other rod on the tripod got pulled over and hit me on the back of the head      . at first i thought i'd somehow knocked the tripod over, but soon realised it was a fish as the rod headed towards the water    . i grabbed it and struck into another thornie :D . he was a bit smaller, but still no tiddler at 7lb 8oz. then we had another quiet spell with no bites for a few hours and i began to pack away. dawsey gave it the old last cast and was rewarded with another ray :P :P :P . so a few more pics were in order and the wee chap was released. not wanting to be greedy we packed up and headed for home happy with our day at fahan. 2 new personal bests and a new species for dawsey. just the kind of fishing we love :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
