Hard to see its head but I am 95% sure its a short spined sea scorpion
UP THE DEISE!!!!!!!

If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

That certainly is a strange looking fish Boycie. It looks like it could be a Short Spined Sea Scorpion alright with the mottled colouration, its size and from your description of the head but its difficult to tell from the photo. As Davy already pointed out though, I thought they had little spines up around their head. :?

Lads we are all talking about the same species, it just seems to have a lot of common names, Shorthorn Sculpin, Bull Rout, Bullhead, Father Lasher and of course Short-spined Sea Scorpion amongst others.

There are a bunch more of its common names here:

http://www.fishbase.org/comnames/Common ... kCode=1347

Apparently it is commonly known as a 'Horny whore' in Newfoundland  So Boycie you in fact hooked up with a 'Horny whore'
