I read somewhere that they fish for skate from boats near culoo rock on valentia. if we get a good summer there are plenty of stories of large sting ray basking in the sun in shallow water around the maherees and camp area so they might worth a shot. to do that whole 'Arrive with loads of gear and catch' thing would need pretty specific up to date local knowledge.

as for getting the bait out there have you considered a kite?

Hey Brian,

A kite might be an option. What I was going to do it cast and slide baits out. Basically you cast as far as you can with an 8oz or so lead. You then slide your bait out on a non return clip to the sinker.

I'll put KStaff down for some casting lessons for everyone before we give it a try. In the meantime I will look at the kite option. Might help a lot if we are looking at more that 150 Meters.

like what I had in mind was one or more anglers on shore holding rod and controling the reel while the other tows the bait out further then you can cast big fish baits + leads into heavy tide. a slosh30 backed with braid and would give you the distance and all.

Blannanaraguan!

im fooked if i spelt that right!
it's the most southerly tip of Ireland besides the fastnet.
its the southern most point of Cape Clear island in west cork. everyear i go sharking with nick dent off Baltimore (excellent skipper) and its not a million miles between Blanan' and the fastnet. the sharks seem to be common in the area.

i have fished it just for wrasse and pollock and was astonished as to the dept of water close in, i know that triggerfish are have been caught there also.
skate are known to be in the area also, so if your feelin lucky with your rubby dubby....
the are a few great pubs on the island the main drawback however is a bast*rd of a walk up what they call the goats trail and dont go if you get vertigo

With sliding you would be able to get 150 - 180 Meters. A Kite will get you a bit further for sure. And there is alway the Kayak option.

As Brian mentioned, UP to Date Specific knowledge would be required, so guys, keep you ears to the ground and we'll put together a decent trip if we hear anything.
