last minute Bass

#1 Post by red »

People, me and a friend Phil:

Duration, 2130-0000:

Tide, high water just before 2200 i think:

Weather, raining, slight winds:

Bait,1 crab, razor, frozen mack and squid, :

Rigs, 1 hook clip down size 1, 2 hook flappers size 2:

Results, me 1 Bass, 52cms :D , Phil, blank  :

Report, we decided to go back to the beach for a last minute session before the ban came in. we had 3 rods set up, 2 with razor on flappers at about 35-40 yards and one with mack and squid as far as i could cast hoping for a doggie or maybe a bull huss. the water was very weedy with huge clumps coming in on the hooks and lead and we lost 2 traces trying to pull out of weed. we moved a bit to our left and it wasnt as bad so stayed here. there was still weed hitting the line giving small looking bites but we stuck it out putting fresh bait on every 10 mins and clearing the line. at about 2230 i put crab on the rod at distance and seemed to get a bite but whatever it was got lost on the way in. it was like a dead weight but giving small kicks so probably a doggie, dont think it was weed. this rod wasnt touched after that.
at about 2300 we were beginning to think we were gonna blank for the first time here in a while when i thought i saw my rod twitching. i held it up but couldnt feel anything so left it thinking it was more weed. then it started again. i lifted it again and felt something on so i struck and started reeling in but wasnt sure if it was a fish or weed. then the line went slack so i knew it was into a fish but caught up with it after a few yards. i was wary of getting snagged in weed on the way in so just tried to keep pressure on the line and bring the fish in with the waves. after a little while i had a nice 52cm Bass on the beach. got a few quick photos before putting him back.
we gave it another few casts after that but nothing was taking. we packed up at 12 and headed home, dreaming of the month to be over   . roll on the 16th of June

cheers alan, headin out today to try for a few giltheads and flounder. a 35cm flounder on a spinning rod can be a bit of craic  .
as for the giltheads, ive never caught one but fingers crossed.
