Wexford 09.05.09 & 10.05.09 Galway 11.05.09

#1 Post by saltydog »

People: Myself on the 9th, Myself corbyeire & shamoo0804 on the 10th, Myself spindlefist & Bradan on the 11th

Duration: many hrs

Tide: all stages

Weather: Generally good bar Galway the 11th blowing a gale

Bait: lug, mackerel, sandeel, squid, razor, blueys, crab, rag

Rigs: various

Results: Bass, Flounder, Dab, Dogs, Lesser Weaver, Long Spined Sea Scorpion

Report: Wexford Sat 9th 14:00-02:00 with a break mid way for refreshments. I headed south down the coast to fish a mark that I'd been reliably informed had been producing some nice Bass over low water. I could see patches of weed so i set up one rod to begin with to see if it was going to cause trouble. Unfortunately it was the really grassy weed which covers everything so after about 1.5hrs i'd had enough and travelled back up the coast a short distance to fish another mark which doesn't get a great deal of fishing pressure and has some nice Bass among its series of sand banks. I couldn't see any weed so i set up two rods loaded with lug and cast out and that was the mistake i made spent the next 20 mins pulling weed  packed up and ventured back towards North Wexford. I was beging to think i'd used up my quota of luck catching the Bass the previous evening. A quick stop of for some grub and to form a plan of attack for the evening, I settled on a North Wexford beach to try an escape the weed. Set up two rods with 3/0 pennel pully's loaded with lug, one in close the other further out. There was no weed :) and i was into doggies soon after starting, then after about an hour i got my second Bass of the trip  followed by more doggies and Bass number 3 of the trip 8) was happy out with the Bass (all released to get their groove on) so i thought i'd try for smuts again but as with the night before nothing doing on the crab.

Wexford Sun 10th 14:30-18:30 I got a call from shamoo0804 at lunchtime to see was i going fishing as himself and corbyeire were after arriving from a successful trip Shad fishing at St Mullin. The wind was blowing NNE and the was no surf running onto the beach plus it was daylight so we weren't expecting too much and thats how it turned out with shamoo00804 getting a Flounder and Dab, and myself two Dabs one of wich took a size 3/0 on the pennel rig and i got my 2nd new species of the trip a little Lesser Weaver who also took a 3/0 pennel pully.

Galway Mon 11th 16:00-22:30 Got up at 05:00 to be back in work in Galway at 07:30 (I love that new road  ) I'd organised to meet spindlefist ad he was in Galway on business tried Blackrock as i hadn't fished it since last November when we had a good few species. The wind was blowing a hooley SE across the bay kicking up some nice white water, but the fish wren't playing ball i managed another new species for the year a Long Spined Sea Scorpion and that was it very poor fishing was sure we'd get some doggies and flats but never materialised. Spindlefist headed off to attend to some business and i was joined for the last couple of hours by Bradan. We tried various combos but no joy spindelfist arrived back later to see if we had anyluck into the darkness but nothing  we packed up soon after vowing not to come back till the Huss are there later in the year.

That was a hell of a weekend's fishing - well done on getting a couple more bass and getting some new species.

The easterly wind is a killer alright - I had hoped to have a few more sessions before the 15th but until the wind changes it is probably not worthwhile.

10 blanks at least in that period

pity spindlefist met all these bad fishing sessions

at least you got some new species salty!

Cheers Brian aiming for 30 species this year so a mini species session will have to be done at some stage....

As far as i can see Silverstrand is still fishing well with good quality flounder being caught along with a handful of other species. Spiddal has been a let down but there's hardly been any reports from the Salthill area in a long time as i said i haven't fished it since last November when myself and mga had a busy session with a fish most casts dogs huss pouting coalie and a couple of other species i can't think of off hand. South & East Galway Bay have been shocking so far this year and myself and Brian in particular have invested alot of time checking out marks in this area with not alot to show for our efforts. There's still alot of effluent flowing into the Bay around the Kinvarra area which can't be helping matters..... On a more opptimistic note there's a lot of Dolphins in the Bay at the moment and mackerel and sandeel are starting to show in numbers time will tell the presence of these bait fish brings a return to decent fishing. There's been lots of reports of trawlers making sweeps of the Bay around the Fanore and Blackhead areas both of which haven't fished well in the last couple of years. Hopefully things will pick up as it's a shame for a body of water was vast as the Bay to fish so poorly.... anyone else got any ideas as to why it's fishing poorly?

Howdy Dave the weever was on a clipped pennel rig banged out between 80-100 yrds at the back of a sand bank but they're often caught very close in flappers too this one went for plain lug
