GREYSTONES 9-05-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me

Duration:6-30pm-11pm

Tide:rising

Weather:fine

Bait:rag,mack,squid

Rigs:flappers,mini rigs

Results: lots of whiting, 3 x doggies, 1 x shore rockling.

Report:Tried the steps in Greystones, as distinct from the rocks, for a change and arrived to see the water was at low tide. Got set up by 6-30pm and had no bites till around 8pm, a whiting  which didnt promise much for the evening. The only action was a boat whose engine must have died .getting towed near to the harbour .

I had a good session here on the last full moon so i was hopeful things would pick up later. As dusk fell I attached some chemical lights to my rigs to see if they would attract anything and they did ,,,,,,,,,whiting after whiting   ,,,singles and doubles   ,,,but i couldnt really tell if it was the lights or just an explosion of whiting :!: .

I tried spinning for a while in between the rocks, but no joy  ,,, then i switched to a 1 hook mini rig , size 1 lead, with a chem light attached. I lost this rig with the lead catching in the rocks so i just freelined a piece of mack tipped with squid . The chem light must have worked here cos i reeled in a nice shore rockling of 30cms, really chunky and lively  .

It was nice seeing the lights flying through the air when i cast out and I got three doggies and numerous whiting in the next hour .

As i was reeling in the 3rd doggie i noticed a small furry creature scrambling gracefully over the rocks under my feet. I was intent on landing the doggie so it took a few moments before my brain kicked into gear to tell me "that was a f?%king rat   :? :? ". After that i was spending more time scanning the area for red eyes. I caught him sneaking up to my bait and turned the full headlight on him,,,he ran back but only a few yds and sat there waiting on me to turn my back. It was time to pack up,,,next time i'm packing lead . I'll be looking for a fishing buddy there in future.

Well done Dave interesting about the chemical light Al had a shore rockling as soon as he changed over to a rig with one attached last week might be something in that  :) you should get a pet ferret the rats wouldn't come with in a mile of it

It's amazing that that small boat could tow the tug the whole way back to the harbour

ive had a little bit of success with them chemical lights from piers. never tried them from a beach tho.

one night a few months back we were fishing from a pier. it was whiting after whiting when i stuck on a light just above the top hook on on a 2 hook flapper. i ended up with a few (very)small congers and some doggies, all on the top hook with the occasional whiting on the bottom. my friend who was 10 yards away from me only managed whiting for the rest of the night and was too stubborn to admit it MIGHT be the lights that were working and refused to use them.

its always worth trying something different, no matter how mad it seems. especially if the fishing is poor.

Well done Dave, that's interesting about the chemical lights - I guess some species would be attracted to the light whereas others would be scared off - but if there is something edible about the whiting will be on it.

Dave I thought you had fishing buddies although they are small furry little buggers only intent on stealing your bait :)

Not a bad size to the whiting.
