Glasscarraig/Cahore 5/5/2009
MPeople:Me Megan and the dog
Duration:10 minutes !!!!!!!
Tide:rising
Weather:didnt matter
Bait:the dog took the mack
Rigs:some fools
Results:dog +discarded rig+hook in jaw of dog+vet+surgery+vet bill
Went to Cahore/Glasscarraig to do some spinning and just after I got set up we heard the dog whining bahind us and saw to our horror she had found a rig left behind by some idiot with fresh mack on 2 hook trace. One of the hooks was buried in the scissors of her jaw. The daughter was frantic and we tried to see how bad it was but it was too much for us to take on so off we go to nearest vet(in Gorey). He had to knock out the dog and operate on her . I would not like anyone else to go through that ordeal.
SO, FOR HEAVENS SAKE TAKE YOUR GEAR HOME.DONT LEAVE TRACES, HOOKS OR LINE ON THE SHORE WHERE KIDS DOGS BIRDS ETC CAN COME A CROPPER.
And to the gob***** who left it there.......... Thanks pal.

Re: Glasscarraig/Cahore 5/5/2009
hate to say it but some dog owners are a real pain as well, only a couple of weeks ago some dog came over to me on a beach in wexford, while i was baitin a trace, grabbed the hook out of my hand and ran off with a three hook flapper in its mouth, ended up chasing the dog and having to cut the hook out. with no owner around or tag on its colar there was no way of even telling them your mutt now has a kamasan stuck in its, throat, to be honest it didnt stop it returning on several occasions and devouring what was left of my bait behind my back. im not condoning your man, but we've all left a trace behind now and then its easy to forget when your packing up, the moral of the story is your dog should be on a lead at all time in a public place. before anyone asked i love dogs and have owned two of them

Re: Glasscarraig/Cahore 5/5/2009
tend to agree with eric here
too often dog lovers descend on a beach and take the lead off - once this happens - all my sympathy is gone - they are breaking the law by not controlling their dog
with good reason they are banned from beaches in the summer
it goes from merely pissing on your stuff to the unfortunate incident of being hooked above
and usually if you say anything to their esteemed owners - its mostly blind indifference to being told to f off is what you get

Re: Glasscarraig/Cahore 5/5/2009
I actually disagree. people should have controll over their dogs, I walk my dog everyday on the beach with no lead he has always been around fishing gear and will not touch anything or bother anglers, What law says he has to be on a lead??
I always look around when I'm leaving to make sure there are no rigs left on the beach, I accept that it does happen but then you are directly responsible for what happens with it,

Sorry to hear about what happened to your dog. I think some people forget that a dog is only a dumb animal after all, they dont know the rules about beaches/piers etc. I always check around a mark to see if there is any leads, bits of traces etc that i can cannibalise and more often than not i find something. Owners should check out the area for hooks etc especially if the area is frequently used for fishing. Anglers should bring their litter and stuff home but hooks can easily be missed when packing up .P S Dogs dont always have to be on leads but under effective control

Re: Glasscarraig/Cahore 5/5/2009
Thanks lads
The beach in question is not a swimming beach, (rocks and kelp) the dog is trained, there is no regulations on dogs on that beach and that is why we bring her there. Rarely would you meet anyone there.
The point, I hope was made....Take your gear home.... traces kill/injure indiscriminately i.e. birds and other wildlife as well as dogs.

You've hit the nail on the head there. Uncontrolled dogs might be a pain but they're a completely seperate issue. Leaving a rig, especially one with even the slightest trace of bait on it, is probably going to injure or kill something.
