Portaferry Co.Down. 02 May 2009

#1 Post by alanmcc64 »

People:Frank & myself

Duration:1500-1700

Tide:Mid tide rising

Weather:Sunny, blowing a gale

Bait:Frozen mack, squid, razor

Rigs:Single hook paternoster

Results:Wheres the cheque book and pen?

Report:First session of the year so headed somewhere relatively local to dust the cobwebs of the gear. Arrived to find 2 other anglers packing up who hadn't caught anything so the signs didn't look good. Tried for a couple of hours into a really strong wind without success. Lots of little knocks from probably small whiting but nothing landed. On a plus side it was good to get out again as my trips last year were few and far between.

Roll on Monday and maybe a session at Cushendun.
i get by with a little help from my friends.

I was there a few days before just before HT for 2 hours and drew a blank however there were about 6 other blokes there who pulled in about 40 small Coalies between them (all returned). They were casting out to deep water with a variety of lures and hooking them near the end of the retrieve.
I have never fished there before and am very inexperienced anyway so a blank was no surprise! Saw a beautiful Sea Otter though in the shallows which made my day. Was out round St Johns Point and Tyrella Bay on a pals boat 3 weeks ago and although I only managed 1 small whiting the day again was made by approx 25 Bottlenose Dolphins! It's not all about catching fish you know! Am enjoying learning to fish again (tried it years ago) and look forward to some confidence building Mackerel soon!

Don't worry fentster, those blanks will soon be a thing of the past. The fishing is gonna pick up dramatically.
