GREYSTONES 2-05-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me

Duration:4-10pm

Tide:high at 6pm

Weather:showery,clearing later

Bait:rag,lug,mack,squid

Rigs:flappers,single hook clipped down, mini-rigs

Results:14 whiting, 2 lsd

Report:Got an offer i couldnt refuse from the wife   (it involved dropping me off and picking me up again later in Greystones   ), so off i went .Coming down the hill into Greystones i always start wondering if there'll be room at the rocks, but i wasnt disappointed as there were only a couple of guys there. There were 3 guys in a jeep parked up with rods in the back so I was out of the car like a greyhound out of the trap and down to the rocks. I had met the guy who was already fishing before and he told me he hadnt caught anything today but got some nice plaice last week on a calm day.I fished my usual two rods , one out about 80 yds or so and the spinning rod in close. Some gannets were divebombing so we tried spinning lures for a while to no avail  . He headed off soon after. There were a few guys over at the steps and i saw some fish landed there, including a doggie so the signs were good, as it was still daylight. On my side of the cove , however , things werent so good  ,, i didnt get a tap on the rods all evening till it got dusk. A guy from wexford, who had dropped his sister and some friends into the o2 concert , and was passing the time till he collected them, set up next to me and cast out. I was delighted when he landed a doggie, always nice not to blank  . High tide came and went and i still hadnt had a bite  , and me at me own rocks,  ,, while Philip from wexford was landing doggie no. 3   . "It'll get better when the light fades", i said to him, but unfortunately i knew i was getting picked up at 8'30pm  .Over at the steps they were still catching fish. I made a quick call and got an hours anti-blank extension, and fair play to her she left me there till after 10pm   Philip from wexford had 4 doggies and a whiting (all on LIDL rods and reels and frozen sandeels) and i was facing the blank   . Then the bites started and i landed a whiting,( God is good, i promise i'll go back to Mass next week  ). Blank saved and i started pulling them in . In a half hour i had about 8 whiting, including doubles. I was down to just mack , but i thought i should get a doggie on it, after all , Philip, just yds away from me had pulled in 6   . No such luck, just whiting after whiting,,,and as it was collection time for Dave, i packed away the big rod and just left the spinning rod out to see if i could get to 10 whiting. Then i got a massive take, which turned out to be a doggie and a whiting double, which i had to pull up hand over hand, as i didnt want to break the small rod. It was great putting ( throwing them doesnt sound good :? ) them back in and seeing them swim around in the beam of the headlight before disappearing under  .As soon as the bait hit the water we were getting bites immediately and i ended up with 14 whiting and 2 lsd's,,,Philip with 6 lsd's and 1 whiting. Whiting were great fun on the spinning rod  . So after a slow, very slow, start , it ended up in a fishing frenzy.
Dave

Exactly Roger, fame has its advantages  , after all, where were they all winter while i was trying to coax a few whiting onto my hooks.  Seriously though, its getting to that part of the year where space is at a premium ,i'll have to start writing a few crap reports to get rid of them

PS i'm starting to get worried about my furry friends, i havent seem them in a while, i hope all is well with them :( :(

The light gear + doggies is pushing it on those rocks Al, had to hand line them up, lucky there was another angler there to hold the rod
