Fanad 28.04.09

#1 Post by last cast lad »

People:

Duration:3 hours

Tide:high

Weather:flat calm and mild

Bait:rag, lug, mackeral, squid

Rigs:pulley, 2 hook flapper

Results: 4 Thornback Ray, 1 dog fish

Report: Arrived at fanad head with some friends but every cast was being savaged by rafts of weed being swept up past our mark :x :x , so I decided to move up to a local pier which I knew would be a clean bottom and set up two rods with a plentyfull supply of bait[thanks Gordan]. Within 30 minutes I had 4 cracking Thornback bites but missed them all  things then went quiet for about an hour so I thought I had missed the feeding window but then it all started again. Interestingly although I always favour pulley rigs for them 3 of the thornbacks took the squid/mackeral on flapper rigs with short(6 inch) snoods :!:
The only other excitement I had was a visit from passing Garda squad car to check what I was doing on this remote pier so late, presumable checking if I was waiting for a boatload of drugs  . The ban garda screamed and ran when I showed her the dogfish I was unhooking at the time, so naturally I also offered to show her the ragworm.

lovely looking rays, what weight were they?
i am not surprised you got them on 2 flapper rigs with short 6 inch snoods,i get them on 3 hook mackerel feathers with 6 inch snoods baited with mackerel, nearly same as a 3 hook flapper rig
others on the site don't believe me maybe now they will :D
well done on the ray, nice to see some around

Breakdancing Ray!! class pal! well done

Just goes to show ya that it is possible to catch rays on any type of rigs. Everyday is a school day. I still wont be trying mackerel feathers for rays though!! lol. got love the timing of this picture though!!  just checking out your bait there in the photo, did anything take the lug on the other hook?

well done, fanad is great place to fish....

nothing took the lug baited hooks, just caught on squid or lug or combinations, had no scales so no idea what weight they were the longest one that night measured just 62cm from nose to tail, I'll not start a guestimate the weight competition here
