tackle description

hope this dos'nt sound silly but have been lookin at different rigs described as 3 hook flapper 2 up 1 down etc - up and down in relation to what ? checked different pics , they look the same wether they are 2up 1 down - 3 up

i'm no expert but i think it has something to do with hook length sitting above or below the lead, 2up 1 down would have 2 hooks above the lead and 1 hanging below. but i'm sure some of the more seasoned angler's on here will let me know if i'm wrong :oops:

if you can get your hands on book called Foxs Guide To Sea Fishing it gives good descriptions of rigs and and when to use them etc

most angling books have good descriptions of rigs and tackle but there naturally also seems to be some local colonial adaptions (sounds like I'm back at school in english class :oops:

) which are then passed around local fishing clubs etc, but who really cares what we call different rigs and exactly how we make them up, just so long as they catch us the odd fish :!:

I know that the match guys seem to do it every time a rig hits the water,but how often do most folk retie or strip down rigs/ replace hooks etc :?:

I replace hooks after every and resnood my rigs. Blunt hooks mean lost fish so check them during the session. Check main line of rig after every session as damage reduces the breaking strain and could be dangerous. I was fishing a mark today that cuts rigs in bits as theres a rock lip so they will have to be retied. I currently have around 6 rig wallets on the go with many of the pockets for one snood rigs doubled up.

The Sea angler rigs and baits book has alot of the rigs but is now a bit out of date. Many of the popular sea angling books are very out of date with blood loops still used for snoods.
