SAI SAC MA#3 Glassilaun Co. Galway

#1 Post by alby »

People:Kstaff, Donal Domoney, alby, Fishaholic, Cormology, dbrock, eric, saltydog, rampent wreckfish, keith murphy

Duration:1 - 6

Tide: high water down

Weather:clear sunny slight easterly breeze

Bait:mainly sandeel & mackeral but some worms were harmed

Rigs:mostly clipped down distance jobs, fliers and the odd 3 hook flapper

Results:2 LSD's & 5 flounder

Report:
Not much to report

The fishing was very bad throughout the day. First in was Mark (fishaholic) on peg 4 with a 41cm flounder at distance on sandeel. Then things went extremely quiet for a couple of hours before Conor (Saltydog) had a flounder in close down the other end of the beach on peg 9. This was followed up on peg 12 by JP who caught a Dog and then Dennis caught a small flat on his flyer.

Not a sniff of a ray for anyone at this stage but we knew if anyone caught one they may possible win the comp so everyone kept at it in the hope they could rescue a pretty crap day. Howver late on there was a few fish caught with Dennis catching a dog to put him in the lead, conor caught another flounder so it looked like they would be 1 & 2.

However at lines up there was plenty of excitement as JP pulled in a flounder and would'nt ye know it it was 23cm where Dennis's had only been 22cm which would give Gypsy the win. However Dennis was struggling with something on the retrieve and we all though Ray, it was giving him a bit of a run around and we all wanted to have a look when it got in close but then Disaster struck  the rig came flying out of the water the fish having thrown the hook. Eric ran into the water and actually found the fish trying to camoflague itself, but it was over waist deep and couldn't be picked up - A huge Turbot. Dennis went out to try help him and the two boys tried to "shimmey" the fish into the shoreline with their feet but it wasn't to be, the fish eventually swam away. For 4 hours in the car on the way home I listened to the boys talk about how they could have landed the fish (tripod spike, net in the car, get a wader full of water etc.) and recipes for Turbot!

The fishing was very poor and the ray conspicous by their abscence. We'll probably look for an alternative venue for next april, as there seems to be good numbers of fish on the South & East coasts at the moment.

1st JP Molloy - 77pts
2nd Dennis Brock - 76pts
3rd Conor Montaine - 74pts
4th Mark Sinnot - 46pts

Longest Flat - Mark Sinnott - flounder 41cm (Double pool, no counters for longest round)

Great summary Alby, pity the fishing was so bad but still enjoyed the day all the same, lovely spot and good company was worth the trip.

Would love to have an overnighter meet up there later in the summer when's there's plenty of fish possibly?

BBQ and a few beers around the tents after a few hours fishin would be nice.

Weldone to the lads who had fish!! :D I hate ye all!

Well done to JP on the win. Good to meet the lads again and fair play on those that travelled long distances for the comp just a shame the fishing was poor on the day. Unlucky Dennis on the Turbot would've been nice to see one that size from the shore. See you all at the next comp.

P.s. Thanks again Keith for the lunch  :)

Are you sure it was the venue, and not just the east wind?

Was out myself on sunday at a mark that always produces Pollack and Wrasse, and didnt get one bite! East Wind

Fair point, it has been slow the past couple of years, but you can accept that if there's a few ray to be had.

Saturday was a little bit of a sickner though, there was some very good anglers & top casters who blanked, it can happen anywhere I know, but the track record isn't great.

Now brian when was the last time you fished this beach.

(Mod Edit petekd)

Alby we have been unlucky with the weather conditions for this beach in our comps over the last two years.

I have fished all over galway over the last few years and would put this beach up there as the best in terms of quality and quantity for ray. It is much much better than the `famous` little killary which has got absolutly hammered over the past few years for very little return.

In addition to this I would like to thank all those considerate anglers who drop all there rubbish, used gear, bbq`s etc all over little killary. Was out there recently and ye have really improved the scenic veiws with your empty sandeel packets and and big balls of discarded line.
UP THE DEISE!!!!!!!

If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

Hear hear couldn't agree more disgraceful the way that mark is left at times. Last time I fished it I collected a bag full of line a size 6/0 hook with bait still on it good job the land owners dogs are smart!! bait wrappers bottles etc etc is it too much to ask for people to take their crap home with them?
