That's a wreckfish, also called stone bass (Polyprion americanus)

The Encyclopaedia Britannica describes the wreckfish as a large, grayish fish of the family Polyprionidae (order Perciformes), found in the Mediterranean and in both sides of the Atlantic, generally in offshore waters. The wreckfish is deep-bodied, with a large head and jutting lower jaw, and attains a length and weight of about 2 metres (6.5 feet) and 36 kilograms (80 pounds) or more. It is named wreckfish because it often lives near floating lumber and other wreckage to feed on the fishes that, in turn, gather to feed on the small organisms found there.

The name wreckfish is used to describe any member of the family Polyprionidae. The family, divided into five species separated into two genera (Polyprion and Stereolepis), includes the hapuka (P. moeone) and giant sea bass (S. gigas).

yes it defo looks like a stone bass alright, never considered that one. the colouration was a lot darker though when it was fresh - quite black and it had biggish teeth. it fell to a rag-crab cocktail at the outflow pipe. if you go over this pipe in a boat with a sounder its like a mini reef that goes out some distance so that accounts for the structure.

Nice catch. 4lb specimen size.

Davy

mate i know it says 4lb for shore specimen but there is only one specimen weight which is 8lb.
the irish specimen fish committee only have one record and specimen weight, unlike the british records list has separate lists for boat and shore.not being a smart arse, just thought i`d point it out.

nice fish by the way eoin.very unusual catch. 8)
